Atheros based usb?
Does anyone know of a good linux compatible wireless usb adapter that has the atheros chipset that's available out there? And also, if you know of any, what are some other good usb adapters that might be just as compatable as the atheros based ones.
The reason that I'm asking this is because I've gone crazy buying all different types of adapters to see which would work the best. I've had to return the majority of them. The only one that has really seemed to work well is the atheros based d-link dwl-g650. But it is a cardbus and I would really like to get a usb if possible so I can swap it from laptop to desktop if necessary. I also have the dwl-g122 usb which is a Ralink, but it only seems to work half of the time and freezes quite often. And talk about a waste, the other day I purchased a dwl-122 off of ebay for $36 which is supposed to have the prized prism2 chipset. I bought this thinking it was gonna solve all my problems. What a piece of junk that thing was, the range sucked, and you basically couldn't do shit with it. So if anyone knows of a great usb adapter out there, I'd love to hear about it, thanks. P.S. I have done some searching and found the Netgear wg111u, and the smcwusbt-g. Does anybody know anything about these two adapters? Are they any good? I would like something new, fast, and with a good out of the box range if possible. P.P.S Okay I found two more, but they're a little bit more than what I would like to spend, the Engenius Senao nub-362, and the Orinoco Gold usb-powered. I know these last two cards are probably the shiznit but I was kinda lookin' for something a little less pricey. Last edited by trueblu8 : 05-31-2006 at 02:24 AM. |

For Atheros cards combatibility, check the madwifi site at www.madwifi.org. They have a compatibility list. AFAIR support for USB based devices is in the works, but not there yet.
For other chipsets, check the driver sites for those. They should have similar lists. Dutch

What Dutch said about Atheros based USB devices not being supported with MADWiFi is true. If, like me, you are really serious about being able to swap wireless devices between a laptop and a desktop, I would use one of these:
PCI Cradle for PCMCIA card http://host219.ipowerweb.com/~freene...fbe4f2d47c4331 My organisation uses them often and they work without any problem in windows, linux and BSD. However, if you find something USB that fits your needs then go for it. Roy |

Wow, I posted this thread so long ago, lol. Anyways, yes my friends, I found out the hard way, the atheros based wireless usb adapters suck a$$. What I found to be the best though, well as far as usb's are concerned was the d-link dwl-g122 h/w ver b1 with the ralink chipset. Those babies work like a charm, so much so that I got a deal on four of them and bought them all.
