Attaching external disables internal - Orinoco
Hiho! Newbie here... I've been reading the numerous posts here.
Great stuff, especially the orinoco silver to gold conversion, I'm going to have to try that out sometime. Anyhoo, I've decided to go entirely with Agere for everything including the Access points and gateways (the soon to be available BG-2000 and AP-200) I found a couple reviews on Cnet and cablemodeminfo.com, it seems to be pretty good. Question is, if I attach an external antenna, does the original one stop working? Is it better to keep the external antenna beside the original unit, or should I place it say 50 feet away for better coverage (if it does not disable the original)? TIA |

On the other hand, if by "better coverage" you are saying: "The optimum placement for the antenna is 50 feet from the Ethernet port and the power outlet. Can I set up the antenna at the better location for proper coverage, and leave the AP near the power/network?" then the question is probably "yes." Remember too, there is a trade-off in the RF cable length. Over certain lengths of cable (depending on type), and the cable will eat up so much of the signal as to make the signal disappear. Search through these forums for "cable loss", "line loss" and "LMR-400" to get started. Cheers,
