Best or close to best card?
Hey guys, I'm new to these forums and I was just curious what the most comonly used adapter was? I have been looking at several different brands and am aware of the chipset features. I run XP Pro on my laptop and was kind of looking to get into this as a hobby. I am a CCNA and MSCE and am a senoir network admin for my a firm in my area. I just wanted to kind of get an idea of the possible security leaks by doing a little wardriving myself becuase we are considering doing some wireless integration. Any hardware recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks, Nuro |

I think if you read the forums a bit more you will find that a large majority uses the Orinoco card, or some of the popular re-brands of the Orinoco. IMO, it is one of the best cards I have used. I use it for both Netstumbler and Kismet in Linux...
All of the cards you find in retail stores are in a class completely seperate.... They don't compare to Orinoco, Cisco and other highere end cards. Plus they don't have external antenna connectors usually!! |

Orinoco Silver for 64 bit WEP or Gold for 128 bit.
Accept no substitute. Unless it's a Dell TruMobile rebadge then go ahead and, erm, uh....accept away.

Thanks alot for the responses guys. I've gone ahead and ordered the Orinoco gold. It should be here in a few days. My first choice was actually the Cisco because I am a bit of a Cisco loyalist but in research I did see that they didn't have an external anntena option and if you put one on there, you would have to hardwire the card a little by saughtering. That is a bit out of my league.
Thanks again, Nuro |

I have a few 1150's and they are super duper... but I always suggest ORiNOCO to everyone since they are the most compatible across platforms ![]()

I have the cisco tree-fitty w/o antenna. I am not convinced it is better than my orinoco, though.
beware...i am running these cards through a smart-amp so their design mW don't matter since they get attenuated anyway. If i didn't have the amp, then I am sure i would see a difference. I haven't done a lab A/B test with them, only some casual driving to get a feel of the new card. Having two antenna jacks and the fact that there is no antenna sticking out opens up new possibilities, though. (eth0/eth1 simultaneous) IT could be though that i have a good orinoco card. Side-by-side tests against Mentat's rig (duplicate card/amp/antenna) yielded more AP's than his rig. |
