I've used a Garmin eTrex Venture, and an eTrex Legend with good results. These are around $180 and $250 respectively. Buying from someone other than the local outdoors store will probably get you a better price, but having the thing in my hand right away is certainly worth *something*. The plain jane eTrex is around $110 retail, and should get the job done as well. Whatever receiver you use has to support NMEA data format, and Netstumbler requires a little prodding to see it.

usb to serial converter
I have a toshiba laptop without serial ports. I have netstumbler working with my magellan map 330 and a dlink usb to serial convertor (dsb-s25). I had to set the baud rate on both gps and usb serial com 1 to 4800 baud, also set nema mode in gps to v2.1GSA. The only prob that happens sometimes is the usb-serial port will come up as com1 or com2. I then have to set the appropriate port in netstumbler and it will work fine. I do not know if any other manufacturers' usb to serial converters will work.
Good luck |

GPSTools.com
[shameless plug] My father's company, GPSTools.com, has a pretty nice selection of GPS equipment. His techs can provide pretty good support if you encounter problems. Customer service is good, too. Free overnight FedEx shipping, too. [/shameless plug] If I were you, I'd go for the Garmin eMap. It's a sweet little unit. I have one here. Haven't tried it with NetStumbler yet (waiting on my Orinoco card) but I'm pretty sure that it will work just fine. Chris |

Another GPS Unit
Here is another idea for a GPS unit. It is a PCMCIA-based GPS solution. I have not tried it. But apparently it can work well for AP mapping. I do not know if it works with Netstumbler. It is just a link that I thought some would find useful.

GPS - Cheap and simple
Try using an old Delorme Tripmate GPS
You need to modify the GPS unit to support NMEA, but anyone with a soldering Iron and 5 minutes of time can do this, and it works fine in Stumbler Try checking out ebay.com or going to delorme.com direct. They sell refurbished Tripmates, complete for $50, Once you complete the modification, you are ready to roll [More info on Tripmate and NetStumbler] Follow the instructions here: http://wes.johnston.net/aprs/tripmate.htm Happy Stumblin! |

Garmin eTrex Legend
I use a Garmin eTrex Legend for hiking and for use with NS. Gr8 product and comes complete with a Data Cable (unlike slightly cheaper versions in eTrex range). I don't have a COM port on my tiny VAIO and so use an Entrega USB to Serial Cable.
It would be nice if the Garmin range used USB connectors but then I suppose NS would need to support it also. Aidey |

I've got a Prolific[0] USB to serial converter, which works fine[1] with my set up. Netstumbler picks up my Garmin Etrex on Com3.
[0] www.prolific.com.tw [1] after 1 day of chasing up their support asking them to send the latest drivers [depending on the notebook you may or may not need the latest drivers]. |
