So your Mom is so enthralled by your wardriving that she's taking up the hobby herself?
Or could you POSSIBLY have an ulterior motive in the reason why you're helping her chose the best PDA? ![]()

Check out HP's site under "outlet store", they have just reduced the price of the refurbished iPaq 3955 to under $290.00.

AXIM!
I have a Dell Axim with a Dell TrueMobile 1180 CF card and it works like a charm....it's not officially supported, but you can use the Orinoco driver (more details here: http://www.stumbler.net/index.php?m=200212#29).
I love it; today I went wardriving for 45 minutes with my 300 mhz Axim and Ministumbler searching as fast as it could for APs. When I got home my battery was still at 76% (no, I'm not exagerating), and that includes launching IE and other programs occasionally while on the trip. |

is it a best idea to get a compactflash jacket to go with the pocketpc and use a cf card then, otherwise surely a pcmcia jacket with an orinoco gold card would work well ??
obviously power consumption would be much higher though, actually on that point is there an official orinoco cf card? from what i know of pocketpc's you'll need a cf expansion jacket anyway, as they don't have inbuilt compactflash ... on that point, the latest (and more expensive) pocketpc's actually have inbuilt Wireless Lan, not that i know how well that works. we are all assuming that pocketpc is the way to go here anyway, it's probably a good idea, (the Dell Axim does look good to me, yes) but palm do have some wifi pda's out too, and i seem to remember a linux pda somewhere.

Actually, HP just put on their website new versions of the iPaq that have both sd AND cf slots. Or...take a look at the Toshiba 740 ( I think ), it has both sd and cf slots as well. Or...get a Zaurus, built-in keyboard, sd and cf slots, Nix based OS'es.

oh, ok.. but do the cf cards work well, as they won't actually have external antenna outputs.... still, any thoughts on gettingt a pcmcia expansion and using a pcmcia card even ? (it will make the pocket pc big, and.. it may chew battery, but would it be any good?) I'm more looking at those dell axim PPC's as they won't actually have a cf slot built in you see
![]() taking a look, there is the Proxim harmony card over here: Harmony CF card

I have no problem getting signal with my Dell Axim + TrueMobile 1180 card....I did alittle wardriving and it picked up TONS of AP's from the road, too. I do wish I could attach an antenna to it, but I can't.
The Axim is bulky yes, but the battery life is outstanding and so far it seems very durable. I recommend it, and for the price you can't beat it! |

I use an iPaq 3835 with a dual pc card sleeve. It has it's own batteries for the cards so it doesn't kill the handheld. 'Course its 1 3/4" thick with that installed! I have a Orinoco card in the sleeve and use it without an external antenna and pick up plenty of ap's. I hacked a usb sync and charge cable to a garmin serial cable to connect my etrex directly to the iPaq , no extra gender changers or adapters needed!
