Best way to increase range
I have a friend who lives in an apartment about 250 feet from my apartment. We want to connect on the same network, but are having the old range issues. I tried purchasing 2 Hawking Hi Gain Antennas with 15d bi, but that didn't appear to help at all. I was wondering if anyone has tried the Cantenna or if that will require line of sight? At this point I have a DLink Router / AP, a Linksys Router / AP, and the 2 high gain antennas. Any help would be appreciated.

Router #1 = Linksys WAP54G with updated firmware allowing 84mw transmitting power.
Router #2 = Netgear MR814v2 standard setup. I am replacing this one today with another linksys WAP54G with the updated firmware figuring this is my greatest point of failure. I tried using just the router, and my DLink PC Card with the high gain 15dbi antenna to connect to the WAP54G, but could not even see the network at all. I can see a few networks in the area, the strange thing is when I place the antenna by the window I get worse reception than when I place it on the desk and it has to go through a wall. Can't figure that one out for the life of me. Unfortunatly mounting the antenna outside isn't going to be an option due to restrictions at the apt complex, and we have absolutely no LoS. An attempt to show the map is as follows (same floor, a nice hallway for the signals to bounce. Construction of walls is unknown, but has stucco covering. Distance is about 250 ft): I guess my big question is: will this be at all possible, or am I just wasting my time? Code:

You'll probably have to forget it. The stucco is the problem. Stucco is a thin layer of concrete over wire mesh/screen. The mesh will kill the signal deader than a doornail.

You'll want two directional antennas. I'm a big fan of biquads because of their incredible simplicity and relatively high gain (yet forgiving vertical pattern). You can build them in under twenty minutes.
Set both AP's to bridge mode with the wireless MAC of the other AP and the same SSID/channel. Set both AP's to use only one antenna port (the one going to the antenna...duh) Try to mount both antennas on the roof where you'll get clear LOS between the two houses. This connection should be a walk in the park. |

if the walls are the problem and you cant put external antennas, then you will need to check if there are a windows or a doors that have direct sight to your friends dept, and put the external antennas in the window or door inside of your dept, or buy those panel antennas and tell to the landlord that is a firedector or light(buy a light that turns on alone and put it close the antenna) hehe hope this helps
