Best wifi card for long range
I have looked for about an hour on this site and cannot find any cards that seem to be really great. I have a Dell 1150 right now and the onboard WiFi on my laptop gets better signals. I even have a 5dm external antenna for it. What would be a good antenna to use?? I saw a +$100 one that seemed like it was awsome, i just cant find anything that seems to really be that great...
Any help would be awsome. ~~Thanks |

In order to avoid another toothpulling session, you need to answer the following items, before even hoping for an answer : What kind of purpose to you want to use the card for ? I.E. is it for a link, is it for wardriving, is it to fry your balls into little nuggets for the sake of humanity ? What kind of distance do you want to cover and what kind of link speeds are you hoping to achieve ? What equipment, including antennae, is used in the other end ? Do you have RF-LOS ? Have you done the math for the link, and calculated the linkbudget and the fresnel zone ? Dutch

Hi,
n00b here info: Dell Latitude D505 WinXP no internal wifi card crap cards: linksys WPC54G Dlink DWL-650+ AP: linksys WRK54G I need a REAL setup that doesn't require unpluging various devices at randomn intervals to make them connect. I also need it to work with an Airport in an iBook and a Netgear WG111T. There should be access available from all 3 floors of my rowhouse. In the future I would like to run a Linux box on this network as well. I will be grateful for any and all suggestions for fixes or new hardware. Thanks! -chris eagleapex.com |

What kind of purpose to you want to use the card for ? "for a link" basic home access filesharing, bittorrent etc. What kind of distance do you want to cover and what kind of link speeds are you hoping to achieve ? 50 feet through walls and floors What equipment, including antennae, is used in the other end ? all listed in my post, so no antennae Do you have RF-LOS ? bah?? Have you done the math for the link, and calculated the linkbudget and the fresnel zone ? wha?? if budget = $$ then i have to go with off the shelf components with minimal customization. For instance, if it's cheap, and I can buy it from a website I can install it. I'm quite skilled in making my network limp along, but i'm paying for 4Mbs over my cable line, and I would like to see that over my wireless. Enough info? -C |

ok:
"RF LOS" no literal Line of Sight at my current position, I need to go through one floor, but as far as another floor up will be necessary. distance from 6m up to 12m necessary "Link Budget" from a link budget calculation page: Required Eb/No (dB) 7.2 Required SNR (dB) -16.9 Receiver sensitivity (dBm) -118.9 Receiver sensitivity with interference (dBm) -116.9 "Fresnel Zone" The distance is well under 300m so that makes the fresnel zone have a radius of 5.4 m and a Freespace loss (dB) 90. I stopped majoring in Mech E because of math. |

What are the building materials involved here? Hardwood? Concrete? Plaster? Drywall? Brick? Where are your problem areas? Have you tried re-positioning your AP? You see, having never seen your house it is quite impossible to make any serious recommendation. |

but see the signal isn't the problem here, its the quality of software on either end. Both the cards are controlled by windows Zero Config... and after a few minutes/hours they blink on and off, stop working, i click "repair" and windows will spend the next millenia disabling the card. it's either that or I routinely unplug the access point. I need the kind of access point/card pair that will disappear, meaning i never have to fix it. and it needs to work with an Airport, Linksys is know not to. at over 150000 pages, this forum is wonderful, but there's a lot of mess to wade though. Isn't there some magic company that makes the quality products that seem to always work and everyone's happy with them and the world? |

the demark point for the router is on the first floor, sitting on top of our entertainment system, right next to the cable modem.
It's pretty far from the microwave, but I don't know how much the CRT tv intereferes. Turning it on and off doesn't affect performance of the network, my laptop card is the real problem |

Have you done a site survey to determine this? You will have to (if you can) move the router to different locations to figure out the best spot for better coverage.
