Build a NO COAX wifi waveguide antenna 1 hour

Build this NO COAX 2.4 ghz WiFi antenna in less than an hour. All gain no lossy coax. Super simple wireless network range extender for 802.11 g or ?. Can go mobile hotspot hunting or bridge distance issues from home office. Really kicks butt!

I'm surprised your dlink 120g can even make a connection. I bought 2 of them 4 or 5 months ago when a local dealer had them for $5 after rebate.
Neither of them would connect to anything > 20' away. Even tried them with a dlink AP.

You need to change the triple A's or use the AC adapter. That spam is a week old, before your detector detected it..
(And if the powersupply for the S.D is snagfree, then I'd suggest a visit to the audiologist )

I guess it just went off because someone pushed it to the top of the list.

Duh.. if you want to make it really super you should design it right. You're supposed to make it 1/4 of the waveguide wavelength, not the wavelength of the signal.

Using my cantenna calculator

http://www.lincomatic.com/wireless/software.html

1/4 wave for a 4" diameter can is ~1.71"
Yes, the diameter does matter ... it's what determines the waveguide wavelength, so the distance needs to be adjusted if the diameter changes.

This design won't give you nearly the gain of a real cantenna. For one thing, an important part of the regular cantenna's design is dependent on the length of the probe, which you can't really adjust, since you're sticking an antenna inside it. It's a nice way to get some extra gain in a pinch since it's so quick and dirty to build, but calling it super is wishful thinking.

Looking at the bottom picture I would have to question this claim.

Quote:
So far I can connect and stay connected to wireless HOTSPOTS 3/4 mile away at 24mbs daytime and 54mbs at night...
That sounds more like wishfull thinking as it looks like FZ encroachment is near 50% (per the bottom photo).

I build such devices with XI-725 USB (16dBm power) , they working for a mile with 1mb/s if correctly pointed. The only competitor is SENAO.

Bullshit! Three other cards I know for sure that will do it is the Demarc, Zcommax and Fastlink 800C.

We have shot a Fastlink 3+ miles @ 2Mbps.

And just out of curiosity what is at the other end of your mile link?

To Lincomatic,

Your little calculator program seems to be RIGHT ON. I moved the antenna to your 1.71" and picked up 3 more db. Was -87db now -84.
Easy to move because it is hinged. I anticipated adjustments so I built it adjustable.
Great program!

Glad you learned something. Oh, and thanks for letting the users on your website know where you learned it from:

Sheesh, you make it look like you figured it out yourself. Since you made it hinged to move, why didn't you just experiment in the first place? You could at least have to courtesy to let the readers of your website know how you discovered the proper tuning for your antenna.

Sheesh. Just screwing around with a Linksys 54g and a $15.00 (US) Airlink card plus a 15 and a 24 dBi antenna, I could get bursts of over 4mb/s at 2.4 miles.

No trick high power stuff required. Does that qualify me for the l33t h@x0r WiFi Guru 2? <barf>
