Can someone clarify this Orinoco Gold Lucent/Agere/Proxim and Hermes/Atheros mess?
I understand that the Hermes chipset found in the 'Classic' cards is the one that is worth gold around here due to it's monitor capabilities, and the Atheros one seems to be next to crap... Where I get confused is dertermining which manufacturer (Lucent/Agere/Enterasys/Proxim) made cards with which chipset? (As far as I can tell, Enterasys is just a rebranding of one of the others?)
The reason I ask is that I am currently browsing eBay looking for a Gold Classic or equivalent and I was hoping to cash in on a better deal by looking for people who aren't entirely aware that their card is a Classic. The ones that have really caught my eye are the ones that have Enterasys printed on them - They claim to be able to use all 14 channels, which would be really nice if it was a Hermes chipset. Small sidenote while I'm here - I know that the Hermes chipset is compatable with most sniffing tools (Airsnort, etc) but the fact that it does not support WPA bothers me... does anyone know if the card is able to pass WPA frames through to software to be decoded with something like coWPAtty? Thanks in advance for any info/links you can provide ![]() -Kilika |

Whoaaa... no... I've got enough experience with the FCC and their rules and such to know better (I'm studying for a ham license)... I actually just wanted to use it kinda like the one that wildpackets sells that is able to monitor all 14 (I know of at least a small handful of people using hacked firmware to get their AP to use the extra channels with imported cards... I'm not saying using those channels is legal/right, but the traffic is there to listen to)- Whatever card I get will be wardrive only since my laptop already has a rather nice integrated card for when I actually connect to something....
I may have been highly confused in the summarization I gave earlier about my understanding of the chipsets and which card(s) they were used in, I guess the clarification I needed was what chipsets have people had good/bad experiences with, and which cards they are in... Last thing I want is to buy what I think is really a classic gold only to find out it's one of the crappy new golds. |
