Can't get Orinoco to work on Windows 2000
Guys, I'm about ready to cry. I have burned hours and hours trying to make an Orinoco card (from Toxic Ranch) work on my Windows 2000 laptop. I am a MCSE on W2K, but a novice to wireless.
Windows 2000 Device Manager is happy (no yellow exclamation point) however, the Wireless Client Manager (or NetStumbler 0.4.0) never find any signals. I have an access point right here in the room with me, and my other wireless cards see it fine when scanning (DLink and Linksys cards) but as soon as I pop in this Orinoco card, it never finds any signals. Jim at Toxic Ranch was nice enough to even send me a new card, to see if that would help, but I have the same problem. W2K seems happy with the card, but it's as if the card is deaf. What types of information could I give you, to help me figure out what the heck is going on? Thanks in advance for any direction you can give this very sad, very frustrated man. - Scott Last edited by sneader : 08-02-2004 at 09:52 PM. |

Client Manager Card Diagnostics all show up as "OK". Status says "Searching for Network" but it never finds anything.
In NS 0.4.0, the card shows up as "ORINOCO PC Card (5 volt) NDIS 5.1". At the bottom it says "No APs Active". I see the antenna icon blink every second at the bottom of the screen, and in unison, I see one of the green lights on the wireless card blink. If I use the "unplug or eject hardware" utility to stop the Orinoco card, then pop in my DLink Air card, then re-open NS 0.4.0, it immediately finds my home access point, which is wide open (on purpose, for testing) -- no WEP, fully broadcasting SSID, etc. I was sure that this card was just DEAF, but now that Toxic Ranch sent me a second card, it is doing the exact same thing. Can this be a driver problem? I'm baffled that the card appears fine, but simply is deaf... can a driver make a card deaf? - Scott |

Some additional information: Toxic Ranch includes a bootable CD running Knoppix-STD (security tools distribution). During bootup, Knoppix (linux) detects my Orinoco card as "Lucent Technologies WaveLAN/IEEE adapter". Then, when I run Kismet, it does not detect any wireless networks (even though I have a wide open access point on channel 1 in the same room as my laptop).
I changed cards and restarted... same problem. Both Orinoco cards from Toxic Ranch do the same thing. More info: Both cards are Enterasys Networks CSIBD-AA cards, that he has flashed to Orinoco Gold firmware, and made the nice SMA antenna connector modification. Toxic Ranch has 100% eBay feedback, and everyone seems to think he is the bomb. Personally, he has treated me well, and all the products and support are top notch. But I keep asking myself... are both of these cards just deaf? Yet more info: I am doing all of this on a Dell Latitude laptop, if that is of any interest. - Scott |

That is strange. When you were using windows, which drivers/client manager did you load? On knoppix, it shouldn't matter, because the drivers are already installed. When you run kismet (by right clicking on the desktop), it should automatically configure everything for you. I doubt both cards are bad. Just wanted to make sure you are using the external antenna, because there is no internal antenna.

As far as the external antenna, I have tried both the rubber duckie, as well as a yagi, with no success. I see you are in Wisconsin -- me too! - Scott |

If you have or are using the Windows 2000 drivers by Microsoft, they will not work. Unloading and reloading the drivers will not help. This stated quote clearly in the README: "The Microsoft-provided Orinoco drivers that come with Windows 2000 do not work with NetStumbler. Please visit Windows Update or www.proxim.com and upgrade to the latest drivers. "

Small Reward Offered
I followed Toxic Ranch's initial instructions, which were to install the drivers (which he provides on disc) FIRST, then insert the card, so that it detects the card and installs the proper drivers (not Microsoft's). I think I did it correctly.
How can I tell if I'm using Microsoft's drivers or the ones on Proxim's site? If I screwed up, how can I get the Microsoft drivers off here, and get the correct ones loaded? Any documents out there that list the files & registry settings that must be removed? I have googled it to death with no success. I know it isn't much, but I'll give a two year domain name registration (.com/.net/.org, includes full DNS, e-mail & web forwarding, etc. -- from enom.com) to the person that helps me get this going, plus I'll also make a $25 donation to NetStumbler in your name. Thanks in advance for any further help you can provide!! - Scott Screen shot from Device Manager: Last edited by sneader : 08-03-2004 at 08:15 AM. |
