wrzwaldo what is wrong with the third card? shop.netstumbler.org sells it. What makes the 8410-WD better/best? I'm looking for a card/antenna. That is why I ask.

Thanks

What do you plan on using it for? If you want a card for just stumbling/auditing with NS the get a hermes based card.

I want it for wardriving. That is why I am looking at antenna/card combos. However, from what I have been reading there may not be much more reception with an antenna/card combo as a stand alone high gain card. Right/wrong?

I am setting up my own wireless network at home and have been told to get the Linksys WRT54GS with Speed Booster Router and the matching WPC54GS notebook adapter. However, it sounds like I should have a difference card for wardriving. That is why I am doing my dodilegence on the card/antenna.

Wrong. The problem with most people who have antenna woes, is that they buy cheap junk. A good antennna is what you want, and is worth its weight in gold. Plan on spending $50 minimum.

Is that anything like due diligence?

I am curious. After having read your FAQ on antennas I wonder, for wardriving, would you say the ORiNOCO Classic Gold PC Card/7.0 dBi OMNI Antenna Kit or the Senao Long Range 200mW 802.11b PC Card/2.0dBi Antenna would do a better job picking up wifi's?

I can see where the 7.0 dBi external antenna could get better reception because it is mounted on the roof of the car. But with the higher power of the 200mW card it might out perform the external antenna.

There is an external antenna version of the Senao (like the one you showed) so you could get it plus plus upgrade the antenna as funds permit. The Senao has a higher recieve sensitivity comapred to the ORiNOCO as welll. Look for the NL-2511 CD Plus EXT2 (make sure there is an ext2 in the model number).

Thread split from http://www.netstumbler.org/showthread.php?t=13559. It was getting far afield for a Buy/Sell/Trade thread.

Yes, that's how you spell it. If you don't have a real dictionary, or a spell checker on your word processor, there is always dictionary.com.

Neither.

Any higher power of the Senao card is probably lost because of the car body.

The 7dBi antenna is known to be pretty bad, and is reported as such throughout this site. The cable is a very high loss, so whatever gain you get on the signal from the antenna will be lost in the cable. This has been documented repeatedly on this site. The 5.5dBi version of the same antenna is known to be unity gain or less after the cable's loss.

Whatever card you decide to purchase, make sure you get a good antenna with low-loss cable. A favorite of the members here is the 5dBi unit from Fab-Corp. http://www.fab-corp.com Personally, I like my Antenna Specialists Model # A162450B. http://www.antennasystems.com/broadband.html

As Thorn said, the 5dbi is the best choice. I have both the 5 and the 5.5 omni's from fab-corp, and the price difference is well worth it. And right now its on sale more then usual, which is making me wish I'd waited about 3 weeks longer before ordering mine

In terms of the loss, the 5.5dbi does just enough to mitigate the loss due to the car (about 3dbi with my neon), but no where near as much as the 5dbi does.

You guys are awesome! My butt hurts and I'm almost blind from reading posts and FAQs non-stop for the last week but the information you share is exceptional. Even helping with spelling

This is what I figure:
1. Buy the 5dBi antenna and pigtail from Sean at Fab corp and mention netstumbler for additional discount.

2. Buy Orinoco Gold Classic card (is that the right name?). But I don't know from where. Any suggestions?

3. From what I gather most of you use a combo something like this for wardriving and something else for your home networks. Is that because this card isn't good enough for home networking?

Thorn, thank you for moving this thread to hardware. I didn't mean to hijack the original thread.

That's the card. There is a thread in the FAQs which details the Model Number, FCC Number, etc. and more importantly which cards not to buy. Look around. If you can't find it, I can give you a link tomorrow.

The ORiNOCOs are fine. It's just that they are a 802.11b only card. Since many people have migrated to 802.11g, they want a faster card when connect to their network.

You're welcome, and it's no problem. Thread 'jacking is almost a national sport on these forums, right after tard wrangling and spell checking. It's just that the guy is trying to sell something, we'd moved way from that, and your questions deserved their own thread.

For crying out loud, Lost, if you're feeling that way, you're definitely not using the mouse the way it was intended!

Couldn't help it.

I think that I have been assimilated! Not by the Borg but by the great guys here at netbuster.com. I’m afraid that I have become a wardriver!

I just placed my order on ebay for the Orinoco card, (thanks for the links wrzwaldo). I also placed my order with FAB corp for the 5dBi antenna and pigtail that is so loved here.

After I placed my orders I turned to my wife and told her I just ordered two of my Christmas gifts from her to me. She just shook her head and laughed.

I think I may have gone overboard on the Linksys WRT54GS router and associated pcmcia card though. I plan on taking these back to OfficeDepot, unless you guys think I am crazy to do so. I don’t use wifi at home but I do want to have a wifi router, with a pleasant greeting to other wardrivers as my ssid, and to just play around with wifi while at home. I could also use it so when my daughter visits from college she can connect quickly and easily to my network. Any suggestions on a simple router that would work with my new Orinoco card?

Thanks for all the help. Remember, resistance is futile.

No it's not Vive Le Linux!!!

You could keep it and then leave it unencrypted and run AirSnare on your computer to see if anyone accesses it. Or just keep and you'll find a reason sooner or later to use it. You'll have web on the deck, at the pool, in the garage, on the pooper, in the basement. I know G8t has web in his basement so he something to do when the Noobs lose consciousness from the beatings.

BTW, I was in the same situation a few months back and ended up getting the Orinoco (Dell rebranded) and fab corp. Well worth the money.
