Card and proggie questions
Ok, I have read through 500+ posts in the past week. I have a few questions that need some clarification.
If I am incorrect please correct me and no flames please. I am trying to compile al of this info. 1. I have a laptop running Windows 2000. I want to get a wireless Lan Card. In order to properly use NetStumbler, it makes sense to purchsae the Orinoco Silver card. I can flash it with an AP if I wanted to upgrade to the Gold card. (but that is another story). 2. If I want an antenna, I should go through fabcorp.com for this antenna: "Stumbler Special" $85.00 that is 1 magnetic mount antenna that everyone talks about (9 foot of LMR-240 to a N Female connector) - 1 Lucent / AVAYA / ORiNOCO Pigtail to N Male, (your choice of 12 or 19 inches), and 2 day shipping. 3. Netstumbler will find me acces points but will not sniff packets. In order to sniff packets, I need to use Sniffer Pro 4.6 (which I have) and Airopeek(which I need). Or Iris (which I also need). 4. Now in order for me to use a Sniffer, I cannot use the Orinoco card. Is that correct? 5. GPS...this will come later. No questions yet. 6. Current sniffer/auditing programs. I cannot use my current programs, Retina, NmapNT, Lanscan to scan becuase they are for an ethernet connection and will not work on Wireless, correct? Thanks for all the replies. |

1. I personally cannot confirm the upgrading of the silver to the gold card. It's a mixed deal, but I dont think it works. Dont be cheap, just pay the 10-20$ and get the gold card if you want it.
2. Yep, that's the best deal out there. 3. NS only finds APs that are broadcasting, shows the SNR, name, lat/long, ect....It does not sniff anything....only probes. I dont know about sniffer pro 4.6, but 4.7 does support the Orinoco cards ( I have a silver card ) and have confirmed this. Airopeek 1.o does not support the Lucent/Orinoco cards but version 1.1 DOES, but you have to follow their directions on www.wildpackets.com and flash your card w/ a certain version of firmware 6.24 I think and use their driver. 4. read above ![]() 6. You are correct. Those programs will not recognize your wireless card and will therefore NOT work. That's what the formentioned programs are for ![]() Enjoy |
