Which card for WinXP desktop?

Which card is best for a Windows XP Home desktop? I live in Mexico City with multiple hotels and a large university campus nearby.

I plan on using MyHotSport VPN to encrypt traffic.

I live in a high-rise apartment, on the 15th floor, with line of sight 5 miles+ out my window

Is Proxim ORiNOCO 11a/b/g PCI Card Gold Network Adapter compatible?

Also, I would like to mount a parabolic 24 db gain antenna on my window. Can anyone recommend antenna's or antenna suggestions?

thanks

Guillermo

The "best"? That'd be the Cisco Aironet 350PCI. Broadcast power is 100mw and receive sensitivity is -94dBm. It's a pricy card though ~$200 retail. Cheaper cards that use the Intersil Prism chipset are the NetGear MA311 and the D-Link520 (RevC and earlier ONLY ). Earlier Linksys cards used the Intersil Prism chipset, but those are becoming difficult to find. Newer Linksys cards now use the BroadCom chipset. The Orinoco cards are the standard of course, but they are usually only available in PCMCIA format. I haven't used any of their PCI-PCMCIA bridges so I'm not sure what you can expect.

I use the 24dBi model from Pacific Wireless (LINK) and I'm very happy with it. You can find it for a decent price at Fleeman, Anderson & Bird. Remember that as you increase the gain of the antenna you reduce the coverage area. With a 24dBi parabolic you'll only have a <8 degree half-power beam width with very small rear and side lobes. Aiming the sucker can be a b!tch.
