I have a Compaq W200 Multiport card that I'm trying to get to work with NetStumbler. The FCC ID is IMRWA1000, and according to the FCC page, the applicant is Agere. There is much info including pics at the FCC exhibits. (Note the PDF's there are not viewable in Acrobat Reader, but work fine in GhostView+Ghostscript.) The internal pictures show a chip that, in the photo, appears to be a HERM CD10827A. It therefore appears to use the Hermes chipset. It connects to the computer using what appears to be a standard USB protocol but with a very unstandard connector. Windows XP device manager treats it the same as the other USB ports. NetStumbler reports the card as being installed using NDIS 5.1, but claims that it's not functioning. Of course, it works fine in Windows XP. Any suggestions on how to get it to work with NetStumbler?
Oh, by the way, note the external antenna jack in the internal photos. The FCC response seemed to object to the presence of this jack, but it's still there in my card. Removal of a little plastic would afford easy access to it. Greg |

I'm using the same wireless adaptor as you on a Presario 2800 and so far it appears to work fine with the latest version of NS. NS correctly identified the AP I use, including the BSSID and that WEP was enabled. I'll check the wireless net at school and see if NS sees that too.

Greg,
I'm using the Compaq WLAN Multiport W200 driver version 7.64.19.309, same as you. It's the one that came on the W200 installation CD. NS was able to successfully detect other APs on my drive to school, a total of 10 others, including a TMobile AP in a neighborhood Starbucks. It was also able to detect 3 other WLANs on campus. I took the W200 apart to check out the antenna jack you mentioned and low and behold, it was there. FYI, the W200 is just a regular Agere PCMCIA WLAN adaptor without the external casing. The PC card connectors are readily visible on the card's pcb. Now all I need to do is find somewhere that sells an antenna with the same plug type. Modifying the casing won't be an issue. |

You gotta do some soldering on the PCB if you wanna hook up an antenna.
Edit: I can't tell what kinjd of adapter that is. I confirmed however that it exists on my card as well. Last edited by OpelBlitz : 07-05-2003 at 07:01 PM. |
