Compaq WL110 with Proxim Drivers

Hello,

I have a Compaq WL110 PCMCIA card that is working approximately 1 out every 100 times it is inserted into the PC. My laptop (Windows 2000 Pro) is constantly having problems with the wireless NIC - notably the Compaq Client Manager reports the card has been disabled (and locks the computer up when I try to enable). NS also reports Orinoco Error "0005" (almost always) and "0086" (once in a while). The card has worked many times before, but reliability is almost non-existent. Every once in a while, Win2k pops up a memory error.. but only when the wireless card is installed. (laptop functions perfectly outside of wireless NIC)

I'm not very happy with Compaq's (HP) support - the WL110 on-line support website is almost non-existent. Drivers are dated 2001. I was wondering, since the WL110 is actually a 8410-WD, would the WL110 work with the Proxim drivers? I would like to try this to confirm if the card is bad, PCMCIA interface is bad or the drivers.

FYI: I also have a Linksys WPC11 v3 installed on the laptop and it too is suffering from the same symptoms. Works every once in a while, but the laptop normally doesn't recognize the card is installed and I have to go through the whole reboot process like 10x before I get 'lucky'.

Logic dictates that when the same problem happens with another card, it is your system that is FUBAR'ed.
If you got the space for it, then repartition the harddrive, install a clean Win2K in the new partition plus the WL110 drivers, and test if it still happens.
If you haven't got the space for it, then I'd say it is time for a format and reinstall.

What make/model/firmware version of AP are you connecting to?

I tend to agree, but the laptop is company-owned and, well, let's just say it's not easy to justify a wipe and reload when everything else has been working perfectly for over a year.

What I'm really trying to figure out is whether it's a software/driver problem... or PCMCIA controller/interface hardware problem. Both NICs are PCMCIA and both hang equally 'well'. Unfortunately, reloading the OS isn't an option... and I don't have another laptop with a PCMCIA slot to determine if it's HW or SW.

Thanks.

I asked that question for a very specific reason, since there is a certain model/firmware of an AP that can cause that problem. But since you don't wanna answer it, I guess I'll just leave it be.
