D-Link ap/router as wired>wireless bridge?

I have an old DL-514 router/access point. I want to use it to connect to a wireless network, and use that as the WAN, so that I can hook my wired network to it. I didn't see anything in the original (1.00) firmware that would allow me to do so.

Is there a newer firmware, or a third party firmware that I could use to achieve this goal?

Thanks, rxKaffee

What did Google say?

Whose network are you connecting to?

Have you spoken to the network's administrator to determine the best possible way to do what you want? I've found that most sysadmins normally have some pretty good solutions that work with their equipment.

You're trying to figure out how to get it to bridge to another network?

Google didn't know that the dl-514 HAS firmware, lol...

Its my friend that lives next door's network. We can allways connect to his server from here using his laptop or my other desktop with a wireless card(that I'm borrowing for a week or so), but I'd really like to beable to connect with all of my computers through my existing lan.

Which would be against the TOS.

Sheesh... I just said the following to him on the wireless IRC channel
Quote:
<rxKaffee> anyone know how/if a DL-514 ap/router can connect to another wireless AP and use that as its gateway for WAN?
<rxKaffee> I basically want to use the dlink router as a bridge between a wired and a wireless network
<Dutch_DK> If the D-link 514 manual doesn't describe that it can be used as a bridge, you're probably SOL...
<rxKaffee> never got a manual with it, so I've no idea...
* variable_office (n=variable@Adv-Proprietary-Systems.s7-0-0.2-15-0.ar4.CHI1.gblx.net) has left #wireless
<rxKaffee> can't you replace the firmware on most devices with open source solutions these days?
<Dutch_DK> You can find the manual online on d-links website. And no, it all depends on the router. If the router is linux based, then generally, yes you can use third party firmware. AFAIK the D-link routers aren't linux based.
<rxKaffee> ah, ok
<rxKaffee> thanks
And then he comes running here to post a question he just got the answer to ??

It's official : Junlygust2006 has begun.

Who said anything about accessing the internet through the bridge to his network? Unless I've skipped over the part that prohibits the sharing of open source software over a wireles connection, I don't believe that link applys to this situation.

My friend runs a local rsync server for his gentoo boxes. I would like to be able to connect to that from all of my systems to get updates.

I already asked him about it, and its cool by him.

Sorry if I offended you by asking again Dutch. I was just hopeing that someone else had heard of a replacement firmware or solution that you were not aware of. I understand that no one can hold all of the information in the world, sometimes group thinking gets the job done alot better.

Even so, you cannot install any third party firmware on your D-stink device. As you found out when you were speaking with Dutch in IRC.

Its kinda odd that it can bridge from wired to wireless, but not the other way around...

So I guess short of spending months reverse engineering the firmware, my best option would be to get a device that is capable of doing this on its own.

Google seems to like the WAP11. Any other recomendations on a product for bridging? It doesn't need to be particularly user friendly or anything like that.

OK, fair enough. Threads merged and reopened.

Dlink routers cannot be set up as bridges, mainly because they sell them seperately.

Now what you can do is get a bridge, set it up to tag your friends network, then use it as the uplink to your dlink which should work (no garantee's milage may vary offer expired on the 9th word of this post)
