Damn easy directional antenna plans

I found some plans on the net to build a directional antenna. When I find them again, I will post the link.

However, what I did was the following-
I got a baked beans can that measured about 4 inches in diameter and 7 inches in length. I had a few chassis mount N connectors. I drilled a hole 2.5 inches from the back (bottom) of the can. This is where I mounted the N connector (I used super glue as I didn't have any metal screws handy). In the N connector I used a nail that I dremilled the head off of. The nail was about 1.3 inches tall after that. IT was tight enough of a fit in the N connector that I didn't nead to solder it.

Ok, I sat about 100 feet from my AP and tested the signal with the card (Orinoco) by iteslf, a vehicle mount Omni (3db,) and this new antenna. I was pretty surprised with the results.

The card by itself got around -90.
With the vehicle mount it was around -83
With this can antenna it was around -75

I will post these results when I can. Now, I am not an expert with radio signal and I really don't know exactly what these numbers mean. However, I do know this. My drive way is 600 feet long and it is an upside down L shape. The entire portion from the street to the house is solid forest. With just the vehicle mount, I can get about half way down the drive way and then I totally loose signal.
With this new antenna, I was able to go the entire 600 feet and still get good signal. I then drove up the road so that I was easily 1000 feet by line of site still through a forest. GOt enough signal to pull up a web page. Also, for those looking to do some triangulation, this is a good way to do it. Just sweep an area nad watch your signal level. Move to another location and do it again. Pretty soon you should be able to get a real good idea of where the AP is.

Like I said, I got the idea from another page, I did not create this. I just modified it with waht I had lying around.

Hope this helps someone out there.
