Dropped connections in WRT54G LAN only

Hi all,

I'm currently attending college and I have to connect my WRT54G in lan only mode (no connecting to the WAN port). That is to say, I have a patch cable from the wall port to one of the LAN ports.

The problem is, if I do this, my wireless connection dies after about a day or so and won't come back unless I connect connect the ethernet cable back to the wan port, reboot, and then move the cable to one of the LAN ports. The wireless light is working all the time. I have tried both the latest Linksys firmware and the Sveasoft firmware. I have also boosted the power to 50 mW.

This situation is really weird and I would like to find a solution to it. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Also, is there any other way to set up the WRT54G such that it acts like a AP? That is to say, a device connected to it on either the LAN ports or the wireless would perceive that it is directly connected to the outside network as if it had been directly plugged into the wall?

Thanks,

Robert

I can't address the dropped connection issue, but it sounds like you've got the router connected improperly. You should have the WAN port connected to the campus network and set it to DHCP or static IP. The current setup offers you no defense from attacks or viruses launched within the campus LAN, and your PC may be browsable (depending on the OS.) The correct setup will allow the router to work as an AP (otherwise, it's just an overpriced switch.)

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I actually do want to use my router as a switch with a wireless AP. The primary reason for this is that I have multiple computers which I need to SSH to so the normal port forwarding is very inconvenient to set up.

Is connecting to the LAN port the only way to do that?

Thanks,

Robert

Could it have something to do with DHCP lease time? My ISP allows a maximum of 72 hrs before I have to renew.

I'd set it up connected to the WAN port and set up proper port forwarding. I've done it many times on Linksys boxs without any trouble, just have:

your-campus-ip:22 as ssh on one computer
your-campus-ip:23 as ssh on a second computer
your-campus-ip:24 as ssh on a third computer

Repeat as above until you have all your PCs served. It's all very self explanatory under the port forwarding tab.

The only problem I can think of is that I don't know how many ports the WRT54G will allow you to forward to.
