Easy GPS ??
Last thing I need for my setup is a GPS unit. I really suck at soldering, so Garmin is out of the question (unless I didn't google enough for premade cables). I've heard good and bad reactions to the tiny saphires. In any case, what do you all reccommend? Hopefully the solution will also be compliant with kismet. TIA

Easy GPS
Don't know about the newer Garmins (Eterx, etc), but as a long time user of a Garmin 48 I do know that it uses a proprietary serial cable connector on the backside. When I purchased it several years ago, many people wanted a cheap source instead of paying Garmin, Inc thirtfive dollars and were "homebrewing" connectors that usually involved hot glue guns and a soldering iron. In my opinion, it was money well spent for the factory cable.

Yes, looks like a nice deal. Wish it have been around in in the summer of 94 when I purchased my first Garmin 45.
Believe me, it was a pain to fabricate that first cable. But, yes, you are right that an old serial mouse cord and their plug would seem to be the way to go nowadays. |

RS-232 ???
I've been reading up on RS-232. My laptop doesn't have a serial port, but has a couple of USB. I was ready about the serial->USB connectors/dongles. Of course, I know USB supplies poewr to devices. How would this affect a RS-232 connection? If I get a GPS that requires a RS-232 connection and I get one of the serial->USB connectors, would it still be necesary to plug the GPS into the PS/2 port as well? My logic tells me know, but then again, I'm known to be wrong..
Also, a few I've been looking at (USA-19QW in particular) show linux support. Was it a pain in the arse getting the firmware and drivers set ok, or piece-o-cake? Thanks. Last edited by nihimetal : 03-02-2003 at 10:51 AM. |
