Emulate WAP from WiFi card?
Has anyone looked into the possibility of emulating a WAP with a WiFi card? I can think of quite a few uses of people able to do that, primarily in a Wifi honeypot kind of setup. It could be interesting but unfortunately I don't have the time or depth of knowledge on the protocol implementations to write that sort of thing right now, but if anyone knows if if has been done, or even attempted, I'd be interested in seeing what had been accomplished.
<retospective mode>Ahh, I remember the good 'old days when I had time to rip things apart and do this kind of thing.. hmmm...</retrospective mode> |

My OEM 802.11b ZyDAS ZD1201 based (Zyxel) USB stick, has the option of working as an AP, built into it's Windows drivers. The equivalent Zyxel model is the ZyAir B-220.
Possibly other WiFi adapters has that option in their drivers, but YMMV... Just my 0.02€'s worth.. Dutch |

Thanks guys, will check out all the links. I had done a search on emulate/emulating/... and didn't find anything here, I'll try a few more terms.
I came across the Fake-AP project looking into this - http://www.blackalchemy.to/project/fakeap/ - looks like it is sort of tied to this, although it will pretty much just make a bunch of fake APs visible, not be a usable emulator to check out traffic. |
