Equipment Dilemma
All,
I just recently got into this, and after seeing all the data for areas from around here, I've decided to jump into this. My dilemma is now really on what equipment to get, i've pretty much decided on the Orinoco Gold card, even though there's no WEP cracking capabilities (though I suspect that to be ported/available very soon). My question now what kind of antenna to get. Should I just get the Orinoco/Lucent "Range Extender"? Which I doubt would actually be very good, and probably not last long on my car, or should I get the Orinico 5dBi Vehicle Antenna? (http://www.wavelan.com/upload/documents/5dBiOmni.htm)\ OR! Should I go ahead and get the 7dBi Omnidirectional from HyperLinkTech? And should I just stick with the Omni antennas? Would omni be better than directional for just aimless driving? (Forgot to mention: Right now, I can only afford one antenna) I'd love to hear everyone's comments and suggestions. Thanks. |

hardware???
Get the usb version of the orinoco/lucent card (silver or gold). Place the unit on your car with a homemade magnet mount. It works great without any antenna/wire/pigtail expense. Plus you can removr the card from the enclosure and use it directly in your pcm/cia slot if you wish. Happy driving with your "shark fin"

Right on - use the Orinoco USB...
I got one of these units and a 10-foot USB cable. I leave the unit on the back deck of my car, right near the back window. I picked up a lot of APs while driving about 50 mph or so... I also recently picked up a Garmin eTrex with a data/car power cable to round out the kit... Works great.....
