Ethernet over Wireless and vice versa

What are the major differences between how a wireless network performs against wired ethernet?

I know they work on same networking principles but what are the advantages/disadvantages of the two, pushing the "security/speed" issues aside.

Standard wireless technology will give you a maximum of 11MB/sec throughput and this is with the best of connections and no WEP security to take up bandwidth.

Wired networks are obviously going to give you typically 100MB/sec transfer rates and the security is much better.

At this point wireless is neither fast nor secure especially in comparison with a wired network but you add mobility.

It mainly depends on your application. If you need something to be secure or quick then wireless is not the way to go, but if you would like freedom to move around inside your network with security and speed not being major issues, then wireless is the key.

Wireless technology still being in it's infancy is very premature and as to be expected will grow in security and speed. Currently Linksys is coming out with technology that will allow up to 72MB transfer rates in "Turbo" mode only with the linksys router.

Current wireless technology runs off a 2.4GHz range where the new linksys technology runs off the less crowded 5GHz range and is not backwards compatible with other current technologies.

Many other companies are less concerned with the speed but more with the security and are trying to increase the level of encryption without slowing transfer rates.

If you would really like to know the major differences I would suggest you try reading some of the following before coming here and posting such a broad question.

sorry you are right to say the question was to broad.

to rephrase, will a wireless network perform any differently to one which is wired, ignoring security/speed aspects which i mentioned earlier.

for example, a wireless network routing DSL .. am i likely to encounter any problems which wouldnt be apparent on a wired network.

thanks for informative reply above

both technologies treat routing the same as they are at differnt levels of the osi layer (both wireless nad ethernet are at the physical layer) Only issue u may have is with a wireless ap having its signal blocked or jammed. Other then that they are both practicly the same in regards to yoru question.

the reason i ask is that another forum poster reported problems with an AP not streaming the data correctly due to a mechanism re-syncing the connection every now and then causing corruptions in certain data sent. i dont recall the entire situation, maybe that person could report whether the faults been fixed or not.
