Fab Corp antenna got bent...

I dig the fab corp 5db antenna I just got, but I lent it to my boss, who crammed it in his laptop bag with a bunch of books and junk. The thing got a little tweaked, but I got it mostly back into shape.

I was just wondering how much effect on performance would be noted if it were a few degrees off perpendicular or the antenna above and below the coiled part were not perfectly parallel? I wouldn't think that it would matter a whole lot, but I don't know jack about RF stuff. I'm jst a squirrel trying to get a nut, ya know.

It is possible the malformations in the antenna and how severe it was bent could cause gain issues. Have you noticed any differences?

Performance degradation?

I don't know. IT seemed like it kicked holy arse when i first got it. I haven't gone back over known areas to be scientific, but it doesn't seem like it works so great now. I do like it better than the buffalo antenna, but I am really paranoid about magnets and magnetic media. It's been a win lose situation. The buffalo antenna packs better and is a bit easier to finger out where the durn access point is, but the fab corp antenna will always come up with more hits overall during a drive.

Hello thewthrman - honestly 50% of the antennas come bent to some degree from the manufacture just in the way they package them or the fact they are boxed so tightly together. We do our best to staighten them up, as of yet, we have not had one that has been so bad as to effect it in any way. So the short answer is as long as it is fairly straight and not mangled in anyway you should be good.

Now I won't go into the stupidity factor of putting a 25 pound magnet in a laptop bag (assuming the laptop was in there along with any media

I would never do that, but the fact is, it had no ill effect. He had it in there for a couple days, too. Never even got it out to use it. I put it in my suitcase when I travel. Just waiting till it is flagged by the baggage screener for "unusual magnetic field" or something.

I tell ya, though, it came in handy while in Europe. It's alot easier to drive around holland and find an unsecured access point with broadband internet than it is to check your e-mail from corporate offices. I had to set ping times to 5 seconds so they wouldn't time out on the way to and from the states.
