is Firmware really firmware?!?

Okay.. here's the deal.

I have an Orinoco Gold. I use it in my iPaq 3835, my windows XP laptop, and in that same laptop with a windows 98 partition.

Problem is, under each of those different platforms, I'm getting a different version number for the firmware.

What the hell?!?

Is the firmware really a firmware? The 'firmware' numbers seem to relate to Station firmware version. ie, WSU_810.exe changes the 'Station Firmware Version' ..

I wonder if you need to downgrade the drivers, the firmware, and the client at the same time to be able to do promiscuous mode. What I'm aiming for is promiscuous mode for my iPaq running CENiffer.

ipaq..
Client: 2.06
Driver Version: 7.42
Primary Firmware Version 4.4
Station Firmware Version:: 8.10

98:
Client: 2.18
Driver: 7.08
Card: 4.02
Primary Functions firmware: 4.04
Station Functions firmware: 7.52

XP:
Client: 2.58
Driver: 7.42
Card: 4.02
Primary Functions firmware: 4.04
Station Functions firmware: 8.10

7.xx and later Orinoco drivers include a firmware in it. So, the upgrade/downgrade the firmware automatically.

Interesting.. downgraded my drivers on the ipaq to 6.24, the firmware didn't change. Guess the 8.10 is 'stuck' in there..

So.. booted an old 95 hard drive in my laptop. installed the 6.24 95 driver. Firmware shows as 7.52 (wtf??!?!)

Okay.. used the firmware included in the driver pack.. flashes to 6.16 (sounds much better).. pop the card out, pop it back in.. damn, shows 7.52 again.

Any ideas?

-Ash

P.S. If I get a 6.x firmware to 'stick' does that mean I can't ever use a newer driver without having to go through this again?
