*Found* internal mini pci antenna to external N Female antenna adapter

I noticed a lot of people have wanted to connect an external antenna to thier mini pci cards... I think I have found something that may make this possible. Have a look here:

http://store.mgram.com.au/pdfs/PDS9191.PDF

or here to buy it go here:
http://store.mgram.com.au/
and search for mini pci

I don't know much about it, but I thought some people here may be interested.

An N connector is a bit bulky to mount on your laptop. Netgate sells u-fl pigtails wih a TNC connector. Better still would be a u-fl to MMCX bulkhead fitting, you could fit one of those anywhere.

Another thing to consider is what to do with the fitting when you're not using the antenna, leaving it unterminated while it's powered up can damage the radio.

Ok, having actually checked the link, I realize they're actually selling a u-fl to RP-SMA pigtail. You've gotta love a vendor who is clueless about their own product.

FWIW, you're right, this is a pretty good solution for modifying a laptop with the aforementioned caveat.

I don't think that's something to be overly worried about - the transmitters on these cards really don't have the power to fry themselves.

The Cisco PCI cards use a 100mW AIR LMC350 in a PCI carrier and they leave one of the ports unteminated on a full time basis - and as far as I can tell that card transmits on both ports

Thanks for the info Fordem. I read a few contrary messages on the BAWUG list, but they might have been referring to the higher-power Senao cards. That was one of the few things that kept me from tinkering with mini-PCI cards, but I'll have to reconsider it!

I would actually buy one of those.

The antenna for my laptop is under the keyboard, unlike in more laptop it is behind the screen.

I would mount it on the back and then get one of those stuby connectors found on AP's and use that as an antenna.

I was concerned about this too. When I was testing one of the modified Orninoco cards from ToxicRanch that has the internal antenna removed from the card, I left it going for about a month without the external antenna.

I have fried many radios because I had shorted or broken coax (or when I just forgot to hook it up at all).
