Fry's Actiontec 30$USD Cards...

Thanks to TechnoGecko's Net Stumbler Starting, Suggestions thread and posting on the Actiontec PCMCIA
http://forums.netstumbler.com/showth...m&pagenumber=4

I remember seeing them at Fry's yesterday, but I didn't recall the price being as low as TechnoGecko had stated at our local Fry's in Anaheim, and Fountain Valley, so I went this morning to check and buy. At first glance the box states:

ACTIONTEC $79.95
ACTIONTEC 802.11b
WIRELESS PC CARD
HWC01170-01
3266361

... but the shelf price (as I recalled) was stating this card with the same sku and model was $39.xx... so I grabbed three, (there were 6 left on the shevles as I left around 1pm PST today(Sunday, June 9th 2002) and went to the registers...

I asked for a quick price check and the clerk stated the card was only 29.90!... So i bought three of these to play with.

There is a big sticker on the box that states Supports Windows XP...

Thanks TechnoGecko, and thanks lincomatic for having me to check this out. I thought I would let everyone know as well in case they were looking for a cheap prism chipset card, that is cheaper than the usr2410.

More info on the card here:

Notice Actiontec is still selling that for 104.99 Direct???

I posted their SKU
3266361
It should just be able to look it up on their computer... wait you said sales guy... hmm.. must be more difficult than it looks... try telling it to go the the Networking Hardware Area, It is like a 30' foot boat that has nothing but WiFi, Hubs, Routers, Print Servers... it is the only shelf they have this all their networking cards, ap's on. The other side of the boat is racks, connectors, cables...

Tell it, it is looking for a purple box(this probably won't work too well if it is color blind)

Also if he is still lost, Tell it to get out of the mac section.

Makes one wonder why they put their photo's on the shelves claiming to be the sales associate for that area... in all reality it is more of a self-identity system when they forget what products they are supposed to know... almost like when a monkey brought out of the wild is set in front of a mirror... except the monkey is smarter.

The $29 Actiontec cards are great for scanning in themselves as well. You'll notice when you open the icon in the taskbar to display the signal strength there is a button that says 'RADIO ON/OFF' When the radio is on it checks for the presence of a signal every 500ms. Ive found 30+ APs already w/ no external antenna and just the laptop. However, I would reccommend getting a real card and antenna. Anyhow, it would be great for war walking or just scouting things out. Great little card for $29, how can you go wrong?

Wonder if they have any left....? It appears the Prism 3 cards are around the corner and they are attempting to clear out all Prism 2 based cards.

You would probably have to go and check your local fry's i haven't been there in two weeks, or since I last posted about the ActionTec's ... I wouldn't bother calling as you can see from lincomatic's attempts... I have already bought a few, but could buy another one if the price dropped lower

Netstumbler v.0.3.23 currently does not support the prism chipset. The ActionTec is a prims][ based card and would be used primarily for sniffing, not for stumbling. Though perhaps the next rev will have more support.

For 29$USD it is just something to buy anyway, how could you not?

if you are persistent you can get good deals. i got an avaya silver for $38 on ebay, then topped that by getting a wavelan silver for $30 postpaid from a guy in these forums. of course, everything i have is now flashed to gold

the latest deal is that dell card at overstock.com but no one seems to know if it's the orinoco or the cisco.
