Question Garmin Geko 201 GPS

Hello,

I have a Garmin Geko 201 GPS. I am trying to connect it to my computer and use it with NetStumbler. I am having a few problems. I have connected the cable, and turned the GPS on but Windows does not detect the new hardware. I have run the Add New Hardware Wizard with no sucsess. It doesn't even appear in device manager. I am using a program called GPS Utility and that can find and connect to the GPS with no problems at all though. Very Odd. When I open NetStumbler and try to use it it just says GPS: Timed Out. Anyone that can help it would be much appreciated.

Refresh my memory, does that unit have a serial or usb interface? It is a serial interface therefore windows will not detect it as new hardware. Set the Geko interface to NMEA 0183 (NMEA in your case) and tell NS what comm port to look for it on.

it is using serial. But I also have tried using a serial to USB converter aswell. At the moment it is directly plugged into the motherboard (not using the adapter).

This configuration has been covered numerous times. Did you try and search for an answer?

you do not add the GPS to your windows list of hardware.. set NS for the correct comm port, and set the GPS go use NMEA 183

that is all

Have done that. Still saying timed out. Before that it said error connecting to serial port. Does this have anything to do with the problem?

Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick. Do you know what ComPort you have the GPS plugged into? Did you configure NS to use that ComPort? Do you have any other programs that are using that ComPort like maybe ActiveSync or Palm Desktop?

Are you certain that...

1) The Geko is setup for NMEA?

2) NS is setup for NMEA 0183, 4800, 8, None, 1, and no flow control?

3) And NS is actually looking at the right comm port?

"Error connecting to serial port" either means the port don't exist or something else is using it!

sorry to cause so much trouble. it was rthe fact that the GPS wasn't set to NMEA mode, on the default Garmin. I was looking at the Software mode, not the physical GPS mode. Thanks so much...
