Gericom USB 802.11b with SIS 162U chipset - compatible?
Just got a Gericom WLAN USB stick (802.11b with USB 1.1).
What I can see through the transparent cover is: SiS 162u SIS info: http://www.sis.com/products/connectivity/162.htm This chipset is not listed in any help document (e.g. What chipset is my card? ). A search in this forum or google was without result. Does anyone know? Thanks in advance. Lotta |

If running Windows versions 9x, or ME, it won't work with NS. If running Windows 2000, it might work, but again it might not. If you are running XP, then load the drivers, insert the USB stick, make a profile with the SSID "ANY" without the quotes, de-activate the TCP/IP protocol, activate the profile, and fire up NS. If NS see's the stick, go forth and stumble.. If not, go forth and exchange the stick.. Just my 0.02€'s worth... Dutch |

Thanx Dutch,
the driver is NDIS 5.1 compliant, Netstumbler works well. The plan is to switch to Linux to try Kismet and airsnort (for wep). A linux driver is available here: http://download.sis.com/download_ste...8362&x=16&y=11 , but I guess the chipset does not run with Knoppix STD tools? (http://www.knoppix-std.org/). P.S. The Gericom USB WLAN 802.11b stick with SiS162u is currently offered by a german discounter for 20 EUR Link: http://shop.plus.de/is-bin/INTERSHOP...e_param=020103) so I expect more requests for this HW Cheers -- Lotta |

Hi,
the USB WLAN Dongle is not recognized by my Linuxes (Knoppix 3.4 and Knoppix STD 0.1). Even worse, the Linux Driver has diappeared from the sis Page: http://download.sis.com/download_ste...8362&x=16&y=11 Have'nt tried my local copy of the driver yet, but I guess there are good reasons for the withdrawal? -- Lotta |

You can find drivers at Gericom's Site
Hi all,
I own one such adapter (it is branded Acer though). However it shares the same chip (sis 162U). I was desperately trying to find a suitable drivers to be used under linux. Since you've been a great help to me, I wanna be of some help to you. Unfortunately, for unknown reasons the drivers for linux have disappeared from Sis's website. I have found a driver for linux HERE : Hope this will help somebody else. I haven't tried it yet on my PC, but I'll do it as soon as possible and post here my experience. Greets MetaMorfo |

First impressions
Ok, here I am.
Last night I tried this driver on my machines. Bad news is it didn't compile on a Slackware 9.1 with both kernel 2.6.8.1 and 2.4.22 Even if in the included README it says it should work with 2.4.0 and later versions of the kernel, the reality is it gets stuck , at compile time, checking something in the linux include ac97 codec. (have no idea why) I tried on a different machine/kernel. It compiled with no problems on a Mandrake 8.1 (heavily patched kernel 2.4.18 ). It has a GUI configuration tool too. You need X to use it. You can launch from an xterm: bash $ wlanutil It started scanning the environment and easily found the AP, so that you can connect. It even displays a bar showing the signal strength. I tried to ping the AP but I recieved no reply. There must have been some problem with network configuration. I hate mandrake cause it tries to configure everything without human intervention. I'll try again tonight. My plan is to install slackware 8.1 with a 2.4.18 vanilla kernel and see what happens. My suspect is I won't be able to use any kernel later than 2.4.19 and if it's so, it really sucks. If there's some developer reading this, do you think it could be possible to rewrite the drivers wrapper as to make it work under linux 2.6.x ? |

Naughty naughty naughty SIS!!
These drivers suck. They won't compile under slackware 8.1 kernel vanilla 2.4.18 and gcc 2.95. Under Mandrake 8.1 (patched kernel 2.4.18 and gcc 2.96 ) it compiled but I could not establish a network connection to the AP. Even though the utility can find the access point and show signal strength and all parameters seem to be set correctly, I cannot ping the AP. However this must be some sort of bug in the driver code, cause from the AP I can see there is a pc connected and I even see the lights blink in the front panel, meaning there is wireless activity. I've tried using wireless tools such as iwconfig too, with no result. My AP is a dlink DWL 2000AP+. Can somebody give some hints? |
