GPS NMEA data types
Hello again,
Can anyone tell me the difference between these different NMEA modes on my Magellan MAP 410? Which one is best for NS or mappoint 2002? v1.5 APA v1.5 XTE v2.1 GSA Thanks eamonn

I use the v2.1 GSA for my Magellan 315; it works fine. The others are older standards I believe. It lets the GPS have backwards compatiblity with legacy equipment.

Thanks Thorn,
i got my cable yesterday for my ipaq 3970, according to the "setups" page i don't need null modem. i tried all of the NMEA options on my 410 but no joy, searching around i found a thread about the MS activesync program getting in the way of the serial port of the ipaq. sure enough activestink stays running after you disconnect so at lunch today i will shut that off and try again starting with NMEA v2.1 GSA do you know of any ppc programs that let you get a better idea what is happening at the serial port level of the ipaq? thanks again, eamonn

Haven't a clue. I don't have an ipaq. However, when I first went through this with my laptop, I used a cheap RS-232 tester from Rat Shack to see if the lines were set up correctly. They were. Then I found the Magellan doesn't xmit a data stream until after a satellite lock. See the FAQ thread for the details.

yeah, i saw that too, i guess the fix for that is the order of the power up, first the GPS, wait for sat lock, fireup ipaq, then MS.
i'll report back after my lunch trip if i get it to go. wish me luck! eamonn

Hmm... That is the right cable, and I don't think active sync is the problem, I at least never need to shut it down with any garmin GPS I have used.
You might try setting it up as a modem connection, and using the terminal connection program to see if you are getting data. That should be plug and go. Good Luck Grey

hmm...
always something. got MS ns1 file with lat/long data from ipaq moved it to notebook and opened file in NS, all works fine. export as wi-scan and run stumbverter 0.1.0 open map of area saved from mappoint 2002 demo in right hand stumbverter pane. then try to import the wi-scan output of NS get: "No map has been loaded. Please load one before importing data" whats about that? e

You need to have Mappoint 2002 installed. If you do the go (in Stumbverter) | Map | Create new NorthAmerica map | or Europe map if you are there.

ok i tried that, the notebook does have the mappoint 2002 demo on it, so that part is set.
If i use your directions |Map |Create new NorthAmerica map then import the same file i get: 62 Input past end of file maybe there is something wrong with the export, i will pull some more data on the way home tonight and try again at home. thanks for the pointers e

Try opening the file with notepad first then either delete any line with a blank SSID or add unknown for the SSID. Then save the file.

i was wrong about the export type, i thought i had read wi-scan was the correct type somewhere on the board but i was wrong,
summary is the correct export type. now it works great! [thanks Mike!] does each GPS have it's own rate at which the NMEA data is pushed down the serial pipe? I notice that some AP's that i drive by don't get lat/long data until a few seconds after the AP is aquired. If I'm driving slowly it's not a problem. Is that something that is configurable on a GPS by GPS basis? thanks
