GPS recommendations

Well the Magellan GPS quit working with NS and Kismet. I think it's the serial/lighter cable, but rather than replace the cable (which I might do eventually), I'd rather find a smaller, puck-type GPS.

Has anyone had any luck with the Ambicom GPS? It's the cheapest one out there ($42.99). I checked out the Deluo GPS's but the cheaper ones are not in stock.

Requirements: relatively cheap (preferably under $100; I don't need anything other than GPS output), USB, NMEA, works with Kismet and (preferably) NS.

Suggestions?

MS S&T 2007 with Gps Locator bundle. Includesa Microsoft rebadged Pharos GPS-500 USB gps (SIRFIII chipset). Works great. You should be able to find it at the local hardware/sofware pusher, otherwise amazon has got it.

http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Stre...6495255&sr=8-1

New price with Amazon is 89.99 $, or used for 69.95 through Amazons Marketplace.

Good thing is you can convert the GPS to BT or to RS232 by way of an slot-in-adapter for the actual GPS chip/antenna housing.
Only bad thing IMHO, is that placing it outdoor is not advisable, due to the the USB connector being unprotected from the weather. (Condoms - Non-lubricated, to the rescue...)

Performancewise it is a good GPS, and with MS S&T 2007 included it's good value for the price.
Recommended.

Thanks, I'll go check it out...

I was hoping to buy in an actual brick and mortar store vice online but it looks like most stores are at the full list price of $129.99.

Tell them you can get it for 89.99, and ask if they will meet the price. You'll be surprised how often they will. I just love a free open competitive marketplace..
Now I have to call my EU congressman and get him to vote FOR that Tourism import tax on cars equipped with multiple antennas and patchpanels, in order to prevent the WigleVacuumTriumvirate of Mark57, CCIE and Whitedice from entering the EU at any given time...

I use the HOLUX GR-213 and it seems to work well with Netstumbler. I bought mine online so I am not sure what bricks and mortar options might be available to you but you should be able to find one in your price range.

That fancy new color Delorme GPS has both USB and RS-232 interfaces. Of course, its is over $350.00!

I have a Magellan Meridian GPS which is great and does everything, but its overkill for wardriving, needs a serial cable, and needs power. I have a combo serial/lighter cable but it just seems to have stopped working... Also, I don't really like having a nice GPS sitting in the window of the car.

My new laptop has no serial port either, so the new GPS with the USB should work great.

I broke off the power plug for my dc/ac power inverter about a month ago. Didn't hurt the jack though. You'd thing they would test these things to -40. You got the new pharos, the one I have is twice the size as that one. I haven't had the chance to upgrade yet.

This pharos is nice. It's sitting on my table at least 3 feet from the window (and another foot or so of roof overhang) and its still picking up 8 sats.

Interesting...in Windows, I got a signal inside the house. In Linux, it was much more sporadic. Irongeek mentioned the same thing on his website.

I drove around for about 45 minutes and only about half of the new APs have GPS. I watched kismet a while and it seems that the the GPS would lock into 3D mode for a while and then drop for a while...perhaps even cycling at regular intervals.

gpsd issue, maybe?

The newer GPSd has problems. The older version of GPSd works better apparently. Ask Dutch about this, he's got the forked branch that works.
