GPS setup problems

I wonder would anyone be able to help me out. I've recently purchased a basic model Garmin eTrex (cammo) and am having some difficulty setting it up on a dell latitude.

I've tried 2 methods of connection
1) simple serial connection
2) serial to usb connection

both are using the garmin supplied data cable.

I've tried setting the com port to everysingle option but to no avail. The best I can get is a "listening" and then a few seconds later a "timeout" on com1, however assuming I am not going mad. it should be on com4.

If any one has any pointers it would be much appreciated
(especially regarding connecting to via the serial to usb interface).

Just a bit more information. Interface I/O Format on the eTrex is set to "Garmin".

I tried updating the the software version incase it was that, using the auto detect feature it said it was on Com1
(when using the ordinary serial connection)

I set the I/O Interface format to NMEA and it works fine on serial connection to com1. Now for USB to serial ;]
