GPS (some assembly required?)
For those with more time than money, or who like a challenge, it appears that BG Micro has some Motorola 8 channel Oncore gps units for $15, less antenna.

Just recieved my order
Damn these things are small. You have to build your own interface and antenna, but they have instructions on the interface on the website, and the Antenna should be no problem either Not bad for $15 Thanks again zev! |

Digi-Key (www.digikey.com) sells a nice active antenna that might work real nice with the Oncore above. They currently go for $37.54 and the part # to search on is ANT-GPS-SE-SMA-ND, I use one with my Garmin II+ as part of my stumbling setup.
From Digi-Key: "GPS w/ SMA Connector: The antenna operates from 2.5 ~ 5.5 volts and consumes as little as 4mA. The unit’s rugged housing is fully weatherized and may be mounted via its magnetic base or integral screw receptacles."

Alltronics.com has the Maxim 232 IC needed for the serial interface for $2.49. Digiky also has it but only sells in lots of 100. There is also a National equivalent thats supposed to be cheaper, but I haven't found a vendor.
Dooh! BG Electronics also has the Max 233 chips. Last edited by sparafina : 10-03-2002 at 11:35 AM. |

I think so Brain, but wouldn't we have to write a script that will find and open AP, release/renew the IP address, then upload the netstumbler log to a remote ftp server. This way you can send a little package on a "Walk-About" and just watches the results show up!! Gives a whole new meaning to Tracking your self-stumbling FedEx or UPS package.... Narf!!! |

NMEA codes for NS
For anyone who gets to the point of sending GPS data from their newly constructed GPS to NS, or to any other GPS data receiving application such as Streets and Trips, I have found that most applications, including NS, work well with a single NMEA position sentence. I built a box that sends only the $GPRMC sentence (exclusive OR'd for the checksum) at least every 2 seconds and that seems to keep NS and all my other applications happy. Less than once every 2 seconds seems to cause sporadic time out of NS.
Make certain that you understand where the exclusive OR begins and ends in the sentence data stream. Finally, it will help to have an operable GPS to compare sentence structure and operations and checksum values against. |
