Hardware (or software) to find wireless clients?
Netstumbler can be used with wireless PC card hardware, to find APs.
But is there hardware and software to find wireless clients, that are connected to those APs? I ask because, I'm interested in being able to find wireless clients, who may be abusing the WiFi system I installed. I see their MAC addresses, but I need some kind of wireless software (like Netstumbler) &/or hardware, but made to find the wireless clients. Thanks |

Thank you both very much.
I'll take a look for the Air Snare. I guess it will let me see a signal strength reading of the wireless clienet device, whose MAC address I'm trying to track down? Maybe something with a graph readout? Thanks, |

http://home.comcast.net/~jay.deboer/airsnare/ Of course now that I've said that it looks like there is a new version. I like the new version! Last edited by wrzwaldo : 03-19-2005 at 08:00 PM. |

Your guess is wrong. But it will track their IP and allow you to capture their session for later viewing.

Anyone played foxhunt? It's quite fun with some HAM entusiasts around here. It works like this, you triangulate a signal and first to find the beacon win (very short description).
Is there any program that could work like this with a wifi client? All you would need is a directional antenna and a program that show signalstrength for a specific MAC adress. |

Hi Groover:
Yes. Something that will let me see a particular MAC addresses signal strength on a real time basis. That way I could walk right up to the wireless client. I can do that with Netstumbler, but I can only find APs with Netstumbler. |

HotelWifi, couldn't you just keep AirSnare running, if you happen to find a MAC that is connected to your AP for a length of time that's beyond what a customer is staying at your hotel, add it to the MAC filter as a disallowed MAC? I don't know how busy your hotel is, but it might be one way to cut down on abusers. Then you're not spending the time tracking someone down by direction, just eliminating them through administration.

You may be able to do it through a "block all" filter rule to the offending MAC address. Page 41.
or If you are not dealing with over 250 rooms you could create room accounts and provide the login and passwords at check-in. A bit more work to admin but less likely for stray users. Last edited by wrzwaldo : 03-21-2005 at 05:29 PM. |
