Konrad,
What is the price on those? The nearest Best Buy is some distance, but it might be worth it if they are cheap enough. If XM or Sirius is selling them as a loss to get people to buy them, well it would be too bad for them, but good us. (Is it just me or is this is starting to sound like the I-Opener debacle?) I saw from the "Death of WiFi" thread that you stated: "Also, their antennas are spray-painted patch antennas on the rooves of cars." Can you give a bit more detail? Size, approx gain, any connectors you might have seen, etc. Thanks, Thorn |

XM and Sirius Antennas still expensive
Here are some typical XM and Sirius antennas...

FAKRA SMB connectors seem to be what's on the ends. A little expensive, but worth checking out in more detail. Konrad |

Thorn,
The new 2002 models of GM cars have their AM, FM, Cellular, PCS, on-star, and XM antennas built-in to the roof. This is done through spraying several layers of plastic and metallic paint onto the roof before the car paint is applied. However, this is not something you can easily duplicate at home. Konrad |

FAKRA SMB Connector Details
The FAKRA connectors are specially built for the Automotive industry following FAKRA standards. FAKRA stands for Fachkreis Automobil. Which in German means automobile subject matter experts. These are available for a variety of equipment like Radio, GPS, Cellular, PCS, TV, Remote Keyless Entry, Remote Control Heating, Radar, and satellite digital audio receiver systems (SDARS). They are color and mechanically keyed to prevent cross-insertion.
Both systems have two antenna wires. A dual system antenna has the Terrestrial connector in black(A) and the Satellite connection in curry(K). XM only applications have Green(E) for Terrestrial and Violet(D) for Satellite. Sirius only sytems have natural(B) for terestrial and blue(C) for Satellite. A Z keyed connector is universal and will fit all of them. http://www.y-connect.com/cbc/smb_pdf.html The antennas are ACTIVE and have DC power running to them. This may mean that you cannot transmit into these antennas. However, they may be very sensitive receive antennas. http://www.delphiauto.com/pdf/techpapers/2001-01-0006.pdf http://www.ce.org/pdf/Study_Guide_Sat_Radio.pdf |

XM and Sirius Antennas
I looked at Terk Antennas today at Best Buy. They had four models, two for XM and two for Sirius. One is a through-glass model, and the other a on-roof model. The antennas for Sirius and XM both look alike. The connectors on all four models are green and yellow. All four models cost $79.95
