Help setting up station...
Hello People,
I am new in this, Maybe someone can help me out a bit. I would like to set up a WarDrive "Unit", now my question is what hardware can I use the best. Currently I have a laptop (Asus L8400) and a Lucent Technologies Orinico "Silver" Wavelan card. I would like to buy a GPS set and a Antenna, Now, What antenna and what GPS set should I buy..? I have about $ 300 to spend on both the antenna and the GPS unit. Than my last questions are: How do I connect my antenna to my Lucent Wavelan card? and Are there any people in the netherlands around ammsterdam who can help me or share the same interest. ?Any responce would be appreciated. Regards, Lockje |

Get a pigtail and build the $7 antenna.
http://www.oreillynet.com/cs/weblog/view/wlg/448 Get a Garmin eTrex, plus the data/car adapter cable. The gps is about $100, and about another $30 for the cable. There, you spent $137. Now take some nice girl out for a nice evening. |

Hi there!
I'm in Amsterdam, and very interested in getting into this. Let me know if you're still around, and want to hook up. My problem is that I have several pieces of kit that I can't get to work with each other. My Sony laptop (without serial port - why?) refuses to accept the Garmin eTrexe GPS that I connect to a spare USB port, via a Serial to USB converter. The PC must think that the GPS is a mouse cos the arrow flickers all over the screen trying to right-click on whatever it is near. It's crazy! Is there any fix for this, cos there's nothing listed on Garmin's site... So, to get around this, I guess I need to pick up a PCMCIA GPS that I can hook an external antenna to, or just get a plain USB port GPS unit instead. And, then there's the Wireless NIC - I can't decide which one to get. Orinoco Silver card, maybe? |

Rob.. Try not booting with the serial adaptor plugged in. I used to have that problem all the time with my laptop until I realized that windows will accept pretty much anything on com1 as a mouse on boot. If you plug it in after you boot, you should be OK. Might be different with USB, but I bet that will fix things..
