hello,
i have searched the boards and done my research...this is more of an opinion question... i was wondering if anyone has a high gain (16+) preference on antennas (manufacturer and model). i live in a tall building in town (also have line of site) and would like to try to get a signal from 1+ miles away. i see that parabolic and pannel may be good options. i would rather have it not so noticeable, so maybe not parabolic... i have the "stumbler special" from fab-corp and would like to be loyal to them since they have shown me great service, but all other suggestions are welcome. opinions appreciated. |

The Directional Antenna's will work
Any of the directional antenna's will most likley work for a line of sight distance of a mile or less. Even a omni with 8-16db of gain may work line of sight. A yagi or parabolic will work much better and allow you scan at much longer ranges.
A flat panel 16-25db gain antenna will be almost invisable even on the railing of the balcony. But, who looks at antenna's anyway, unless you give them a reason to look for you, they won't. A Flat panel with a wide beam width will scan a much wider area, but the right direction finding equipment will still trace to your home. A parabolic or yagi will have a much tighter beam, less to track. Some of the parabolic antenna's have be ranged out to 7-10 miles (Direct Line of Sight) with a laptop and a stock cards. I agree, if you are using Netstumbler, the you would want a flat panel antenna for the wider beam widths.
If you are just trying to make a PTP or PTMP connection, then a narrow beam antenna like a parabolic grid antenna would be better. Its the wide beam antennas that allow things like netstumber to pick up networks more easily. If you tighten the beam width, war drivers will have to be closer to the antennas to pick up the network. Anyways, here are some sites for antennas: Http://www.ydi.com http://www.electro-comm.com http://www.pacwireless.com enjoy!
