Alright. I live somewhere in New Hampshire. For those not familiar, it is full of pine trees, and lots of changing weather. And lakes, and well...it's pretty much impossible to get a long range point to point link out, or even a long range omnidirectional one. What i'm looking for is to flood 2-3 miles or so with 801.11G wifi. (dont ask why i'm not using a point to point link, it's because i want to reach multiple people). Now, I'm willing to spend a few hundred dollers for the antenna alone, and i would think it possible to mount one on a tree 100ft up. If it is possible to do this from my roof, that would be perfect, but i understand my poor wifi doesnt like going straight through 2 miles of trees.
QUESTIONS Do I need an AMP, and what antenna would work for the job? I am going to need to buy a new acess point with an antenna port (unlike mine currently) what would be good for this purpose? Lightning, Lightning, Lightning. We've got plenty of it, and i cant imagine what that would do to a poor wifi acess point. what do i do? VARIOUS INFO -The clients should need no special antennas, boosters, ect. to acess the network. -I'm sharing internet, and a network (although my isp will probably force me to shut down the internet part sooner or later) -And...It's free, im not a mean t-mobile hotspot that charges money ![]() Last edited by oceanplexian : 08-17-2004 at 09:45 PM. |

ok..
i think i see your point. from some of the wifi calculators i've tried, it would take way way too much gain. and a huge power output(meaning lots of noise). Would it be possible for a point to mutipoint link, where multiple users point a (small) dish at the target. so what would i be looking at for omnidirectional coverage at its best, as in whats the best possible omni range, if not a 2 miles-3 miles. im thinking the closer clients could acess the network from the close by omnidirectional coverage, and the ones farther away could use point to point. For users, we're talking 6-7 people in different locations, and is it possible to get a non-line-of-sight connection, as long as everything is aligned?

(yes its MICRO$OFT, i got a good deal) Last edited by oceanplexian : 08-18-2004 at 08:56 AM. |
