How to connect an external aerial for the Compaq WL110?

One question... HOW?

I have been told it can be done... I even see some wind plastic hole cap thingy that looks like it can come off on it, but do I need to take the whole black plastic thingy off?

Also... I have an old antenna, big huge antenna, which I used for when I was about 11 when I had a CB (like ham radio for the US)... the aerial is still up, and I was wondering... if I could connect an external aerial to this card, would it work? I've checked the sort of cable connecting to the aerial (it's currently running into my room from the garden) and it's a coax cable. Has a 1 pin end I think.

The cable looks a little nackered at the aerial end (it has been out there for about 7 years) so maybe I can replace that cable too. But what I want to really know is HOW can I connect an external aerial to this card (links to FAQs, diagrams pleasseee? ) and if so, will it take the coax cable connector?

Oh, and if no luck with this... I'll grab a card, maybe lucent / orinnico for my desktop box and maybe that'll make it a little easier to do this.

Ideas? Help?

Appreciated, thanks...

compaq antenna connector

The antenna attatches to the end of the card (after you remove the small round plug). The card is made by lucent/orinoco/agere. It uses a proprietary connector. See other threads in hardware section for links to antennas that you can use. As for the CB antenna.... you cannot use it. 1/2 wavelength at 27mhz is like 7 feet. 1/2 wavelength at 2400 mhz is about 2.5 inches. BIG difference. Read up on antenna building or just buy one of the commercial antennas. The compaq/lucent range extender antenna with a homemade magnetic mount base will work if the cable it comes with is long enough for you.

Thanks for your quick response.

Oki... I read in the manual that came with my card about the "extender kit" -- I just can't seem to find it on Compaq's site anywhere...

Links?

Many thanks again.

Here is a link to the orinoco range extender antenna. Keep in mind it has only a 1.5 meter long cable. Other companies have many different types also. See the other antenna threads in hardware forum.

Thanks.

Searching for a store in the UK right now...

Oh... I started messing around with the card, I see the end black cap bit. Started poking around with scissors (not a good idea) anyways, does it like break off and come out? Looks like it, not sure.

Anyone comment on how you actually connect an extender antenna for the compaq / lucent? I mean, the method, does it like pop out and break off, the little black cap at the end?

Thanks again for your feedback, appreciated.

My online quest for UK online stores...

Well, found a few UK online stores that sell this antenna, thing is, pc world business sell it for £69.00 (ex. v.a.t) so it's £81.00 or something when v.a.t is added...

But I noticed, consume.net ain't registered for v.a.t yet and only charge £68.35.

Want to know if anyone here in the UK has brought a product from consume.net?

Thanks, I'll stop bugging people now.
