I've been messing with the wrt54 for some time now and the latest trick I do with them is wardriving... using renderman's howto's you can not "just" turn it in a $600 AP, but in a much more interesting 'jank up your rank in the wiggle stats' device :P

Cheap to get, and a blast to toy with.

Cheers,
mokum

I've been using the DD-WRT firmware for about 3 months. Unfortunately, I have a problem with signal strength I didn't have with the Linksys firmware. The signal will be strong at first, but then gradually decrease. I have my laptop's Intel "Centrino" turned to max and set the signal strength of the router to 70 and then to 120 and it really doesn't matter. I moved the router next to the door so it would be slightly closer and it didn't work. The router also seems to be slower at assigning an IP address. I had to set up in the CP for an automatic reboot because after a day or two, I have trouble getting an IP address at all without rebooting it.

The downside of overdriving the design specs of electronics is usually heat. Your components may be slowly heating up until performance drops off. Back the settings down and see if it does better, or at least look at better ventilation into the box.
