HP Pavilion ZT1170 notebook

Ok Guys,
I have the above notbook, (hp pavilion zt1170) and recently purchased the Buffalo WLI-CB-G54A card. I receive a strong signal, but cannot open a web-page. (Page cannot be displayed) I have the correct IP and Gateway settings.

I called Buffalo, and they THINK it MIGHT be a compatibility issue.

Anyone have any experience with this or can you offer any suggestions? I want a "54g" card, with external antenna jack.

Thanks,
Billy

What brand/model router/AP are you connecting to?

No, it's a public access point. I connected easy with a Netgear card, but cannot with this Buffalo.
thanks

You say the page isn't being displayed, but you are getting the IP and Gateway settings. Have you tried pinging an outside IP address, and have you checked the DNS settings? Is the AP even handing out a DNS address? (You may have it permanently set for your other card.)

If the ping is successful, but the name doesn't resolve, it's a DNS issue. You may be able to do one of several things: a) Set a permanent DNS server address or b) Assuming the DNS is handed out, refresh the DHCP and see if the DNS address comes through on the retry.

This has always been one of my complaints when trying to help someone... Now we find out Billy5431 was able to get a good connection with a different card. In the future providing more info up front would be a benifit to you and those helping. Since you say you got an IP and gateway (RF link is good and talking) that basically tells us that it is a networking 101 issue. There is a FAQ around here someplace that will point you in the right direction.

Here it is.

Wiz,
For you this might be networking 101 but for me it's not. Thanks.
Sorry I was not more detailed in my post. I am trying to get this issue resolved.

Since posting, I have been able to get the card working properly, however everytime I re-boot...it reverts back to the same. Then I reset my TCP/IP stack, let windows configure the IP address etc, then repair, and sometimes it works...but more often not. Right now it is not.

Hp wants me to re-install IE. I was hoping for a simplier solution.

Again, sorry for not being more detailed.

Now everytime I re-set the stack, and have windows configure the IP address it reverts to this address 169.254.33.207 255.255.0.0 and there is nothing in the gateway.

This is not the correct address. I have manually entered the IP info, but that didn't work either.
thanks

This is a Networking 101 problem. Please read the link posted by wrzwaldo.

The address you are getting a "false IP" address that Windows creates when it cannot get a proper DHCP address. Your DHCP is not working properly. If you knew the basics of networking, you would know this. Again, please read the Networking 101 link.
