Question I need a monitoring laptop

I want a machine (laptop) that can monitor the wifi around my house for uninvited nodes. I really just want to play around. I was wondering what kind of hardware do I need for this. I won't be needing a GPS, but I want a laptop that I can ssh into. I don't need X, but I was wondering will I loose features by not having X available. Also I want to be able to monitor B + G traffic so I will probably need a 32-bit bus on the laptop. I was wondering if I could just pick something up for like $100 on ebay and get a card for it. Right now I have a ralink 2500 card and a lucent wavelan silver coming in the mail. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If you have a Winders box all you need is AirSnare, it's quick and easy to use without all the hassle of a *nix box.

In addition to what steaker said.

Plug your AP into a hub and cat-5 from the laptop to said hub and run etheral. You can run etheral in winders and *nix.

If he is, then he's the same guy that wanted his account deleted.

What makes me think its him is he is using the same NIC (Ralink 2500) and wants to see who is poking about on his wifi. I have used Airsnort and its a nice network IDS for windows.

Wow this thread has really de-railed.

Just to clarify some things:

1. I really don't want to hack my neighbors wireless or see if vans are parked outside my house. I just want to learn using free software tools.
2. I do not use Windows!
3. I do not only want to see my traffic, I want to see all wireless traffic that can be detected. No ethereal.

Really the best way you can help me is tell me kismets hardware requirements, or exactly how cheap I can go on hardware for this kind of "monitor" box. Are we talking a 486? Pentium 2? 64 mb ram? 16mb ram? I need some help here guys.

Additionally I would like to know can I monitor B and G traffic simultaneously.

Can you help me?

You will run into some legal issues if there is email in that traffic.

Wouldn't that information be best gathered at http://www.kismetwireless.net/ ? After all, they would have the best idea, since they directly support kismet.

Kismet. 486 will work, but you probably won't like it. If you can pick up a pentium 3 ibm laptop that will work, might not have sound though. So you don't use windows, what the hell do you use?? Linux, BSD, OS X, BeOs? We can't read minds, well maybe streaker can, jury is still out on that one.

Wait, I'm getting an image. It appears as though your dog needs to go for a walk, I think possibly because he just ate your TV remote control.
