Interesting Firmware on New Dell 1150 Mini Pci Card

According to the thread about 1150 firmware, the latest version released is 8.72.

I also found an interesting thread about this on dsl reports, and the last firmware it has is 8.72.

I also downloaded the firmware pack from orinoco and it also says 8.72.

I just installed my card, the latest drivers from dell, and the latest client.

When going under info.

This is what it tell me

Primary Functions Firmware Varient 1, version 4.04
Primary Function Firmwares Varient 2, version 9.42
...........

As far as i understand from the thread and the other forum, that 9.42 should be a 8.72 if it "were" the latest firmware. However, i cant find online, nor can understand where 9.42 came from.

Perhaps you guys can shed some light on the situation.

The fact that you've bumped it twice and no one has responded would indicate that no one has seen the probelm before. Just a suggestion, but you might want to try Dell.

Hmm, i doubt i could ask them a question like "Hi, i know ur card is rebranded orinoco, i was curious why is the firmware 9.42 instead the latest 8.72".

Can u imagine the insuing hilarity.

What would u do in my situation?

Should i attempt a downgrade?

I'm not exactly sure what the problem is exactly but unless there is some issue with it, then why bother? If there is some issue, the Dell support forums are supposed to be very good. As a SWAG, I'd say that Dell has issued their own firmware.

Actually yes, the dell forums are actually pretty good.

I have a dell minipci 1150 in my laptop and it works just fine with netstumbler with Dell's firmware that they give out. I see no reason why you need to go out and search for other firmware for it. Dell's firmware is made to integrate with the rest of the dell hardware they have so that there's no other conflicts.

This is probably why the number is a bit different but the firmware probably has the right stuff you want in it. Are there any bugs with the current firmware you are using? If there's none, why update it? Dont fix something if its not broken.

You guys are right.

I was just wondering what was going on. After reading through all the threads about the firmware and such i thought there might be some problems.

But im happy to say there are none and the card works flawlessly under XP and FreeBSD.

same problem

got the wardriving kit from wardriving world on ebay, it's a enterasys 802.11b high rate ds

install the software first, then slapped the card in, windows said found new hardware (alittle square box with this--> !"_%42/. square box again /! with 2 more little boxs).

windows tried to install, then failed to find the driver.
went to roamabout and downloaded the drivers for it, finally got it to work but the firmware say's

primary function firmware variant 1, 4.04

station function firmware variant 2, 9.42

when using NS the signal stays constant at 98 and never changes
i'ved used different driver, upgrading firmware, nothing seems to work. i would like to have the client manager work with the card driver i would use (like orinoco) and still be able to use NS.

can not figure out the combination for the 2
