Arrow just wanted any wifi network. bought a 3com setup...

3com wireless gateway 11g (3crwe554g72) and 3com wireless 11g network pci cards to go with that.

my problem is: if i try to ftp anything inside the network it wont reach over 800kb/sek(if i change to other channels beside #6 it goes down to about 400kb/sek)? is this really normal? sounds way low.. the signal is 100% on all cards and less then 1meter away from the gateway
also tried to download stuff from the internet and cant seem to reach over 400kb/sek when it should be much higher
installed latest drivers from 3com (3crwe554g72_01_02_13 router, 3crdag675_1 card)

should i just try to get something else(around same price range)/get new drivers or is this what to be expected from 54mpbs?

You're way too close to the gateway. The radio is probably overloaded. If you're that close, use a cable. 3m freespace is the minumum you probably want to use this equipment.

actually im going to move to move it away a few meters with a wall inbetween so shouldnt be to close. could that be the reason for low speeds?
im short on power outages atm and recently bought the thing so havent had the time to look for a powercord with several connections>_<

It could be. Plus, it's the easiest thing to check and fix.

By the way, the figures you quoted are about right for 802.11b. Are you sure everything is set to operate at "g" speeds?

i would belive so to.. but all my nic's say its connected to 54mbps/11g and if i log into the gateway it says:
Client Type
11g

i have still not moved the gateway(but it is around 1-2meters away with a bookshelf in between) and ive noticed several others have wifi in the building and if i log on to theirs connection i get much better ping values from remote sites. reason is my gateway getting flooded by to strong signal? going to lurk around today for a powercord
(btw i seem to be the only one to use any security^_^)

Hey dimwit... You are logging on to others connection ??? And you ofcourse have got their permission to do that, even if it's only for testing ?
You are committing a felony otherwise, and as far as I know, that is one of the things NOT condoned by the community here. Better don your flameretardent asbestos underwear....

are you sure it's not just your ISP? try plugging in w/ ethernet and test the speed.

dutch i wont use their connection(it was aproved btw..)

i have moved the gateway further away but it did not make much difference.

lincomatic ive done several test transfers through lan,
with small files its around 400-800kb/sec.
a 457mb file took 07:47min at average 1mb/sec (with ethernet cable its +10mb/sec)

anyone have any good idea whats up?

edit: update
ok tried to use all ethernet now through the gateway. result: 11mb/sec on average
also tried using the ftp host on ethernet and connected with wireless comp #2 downloading. result: average 2mb/sec to a final 04:13min for 457mb file

As English isn't my native tongue, it might be I have failed Reading And Comprehension 101, but lets just dissect your original statement:

You noticed several others having WiFi.. And you get better ping values from remote sites, if you log on to their connections...
So in order to know that, you HAVE logged on to their connections... Did you have permission to do that ? A simple "Yes" or "No" will suffice...

If "Yes", then no problem..
If "No", then you have committed a felony, even if it was just to ping another site. You utilized an Internet connection which you weren't authorized to use. Thats called stealing. And you have admitted it on a public forum. Remember that stupidity isn't a very good legal defence...

Just answer "Yes" or "No" to the question: Did you have permission to utilize the connections of other people in the building ?
