Laptop internal antenna measurements?
Has anybody information on laptop/notebook internal antennas?
I was wondering whether internal antennas are always designed to work in both frequency bands for 802.11b (2.4GHz) and 802.11a (5Ghz)? I would like to upgrade my old Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 series with an internal mini PCI card. I would like to get a 802.11a/b/g card but I don't know whether the internal antennas support the 5GHz band. Maybe somebody has some data on the return loss of the internal antennas in the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands? |

Check the documentation for the card you're buying, it's unlikely that there is an antenna jack for the A band. Nearly all of the mini-PCI cards I've seen lack a dedicated jack and the documentation is vague, I don't know if there is a built-in dipole or not. The only exception is a handful of 802.11a-only cards that are found in some wireless routers with internal mini-PCI slots, and these may not work in a laptop anyway...
