Laptops slip-slidin' away....
A suggestion for those who are stumbling with a laptop on the passenger seat: Consider putting something like these on it.
http://www.grip-it.com/ I ordered some of them a week or so ago and got them yesterday, and while they don't make as much difference for my grip as I expected them to, they make my laptop stay in place on the passenger seat quite well. They're OK for the grip as well, but a much harder rubber than I expected so they don't have much of a "sticky" grip on my fingers. fencepost obDisclosure: I have absolutely nothing to do with the company mentioned here other than having purchased some of their product recently, and I'm not expecting to ever need to again since I got a several spare packages to see what the variety looked like. Some of those will got to friends, and one or two will stay with me for my next laptop. |

Fencepost,
For "sticky" rubber mats, look at the soft rubber mesh that stores sell to line kitchern drawers. Try stores such as KMart, WalMart and Ames. Sears sells a heavy duty version in the Tools section. They sell it as a drawer liner for the big roll-around tool boxes. If you are at all interested in something sturdier, try searching on "laptop" and "vehicle" and "mount" in these forums. Several threads have come up before. The solutions range from homemade to professional designs. Cheers, Thorn |

Low Tech Solution
My current solution is low-tech, but it works! I seat-belt my Laptop (Compaq Armada 1700) sideways into the passenger seat. Since the PCMCIA slots are on the right hand side of the machine, I use my garage door opener as a spacer to keep the Orinoco card and pig tail connector from touching the seat (prevents wear and tear).
This last weekend I had to travel from Louisville, KY to Erie, PA, and this set up worked real nice. With power from the cigarette lighter and a cassette converter feeding audio into the van's radio, I listened to MP3s and stumbled all the way up. I may invest in a better solution some day, but for now this solution provides quick setup and easy tear-down. Bill |
