Linksys BEFW11S4 + Orinoco Silver Woes
Hey all, new to these parts so be gentle.
I've got the ever popular linksys BEFW11S4, with the latest (1.44) firmware and an Orinoco Silver with the (what I believe is) the most recent firmware in my Del Latitude CPI (366Mhz, 128Megs ram, Windows XP, no service pack). I've been unable to get these to play nicely, and I've put quite a bit of time into both. I've read some people say as an aside in posts here and else where that these two seems to have some problems. Here is my experience so far: The orinoco client manager shows my signal strength as low and that it is searching for a network. Occasionally it will flash to excellelent, and connect to my WAP for about half a second, then go back to searching for the network and the low signal strength. I can duplicate this by hitting 'refresh' under the advanced properties for the wireless connection. I took the laptop with me on a drive through a heavy suburban area and picked up one network with netstumbler, though I didn't try to access it for testing purposes. I'm guessing that if I picked up a network that my card is configured correctly. As things stand:
What irks me about all of this is that I had it working for a few hours, but it stopped when I tried to use it a day or two later. I'm not quite sure, but I might've upgraded the firmware on the router inbetween the time when it was working and it wasn't. Any records on what revisions of firmware for either might work? I've just moved to the dorms, and the router won't be my main gateway anymore as it will just serve as a bridge betwen my main box and my fileserver, so using an older, insecure firmware for the router isn't really that much of a problem |

Help?
what kernel version of XP are you running? I've had some problems with kernel version 1600.
Go to Microsoft.com Make sure your are on a broadband connection, preferably cable. Search under "downloads" for xp. Check your version of xp "home '' "office" " Professional" etc. Read the compatibility and read me files on SP1. If you chose to download this, plan on a min of about 40 minutes to do the SP 1 upgrade, then reboot. Have them do a run check on your xp. On the far left, you will get a list of 3 maybe more or less firmware upgrades. Click on upgrades and look for microsoft 7.14 driver upgrades for Orinoco. These are upgraded drivers provided by Orinoco to Microsoft that are for XP. Down load it, reboot and then check and see if your orinoco card now works with the Linksys befw114 |
