Every WAP I have dealt with STRONGLY insists that any changes to settings be done over the copper. Even if you are thinking about going a pure wireless network.. it would be a wise idea to have some cheesebox machine (say your household fileserver) hard wired to the AP so that any changes can be done from it. Firmware upgrades should ONLY be done over the copper... doing otherwise is begging for trouble.

You could always just get one of those so you have a wired solution handy. It works under WinXP and 2k without any problems. I carry it and my wireless card in my bag at all times. And you really can't beat the price.

Nah.. I have two 3Com 589d's 10 mbit, 16 bit cards and no drivers needed if I am running win95B or higher.

I also have a slew of other pcmcia nics as well

That post was actually meant for the OP, just so that he'd have some wired solution around. I have some 589D's laying around here as well. And I've seen boxes of them at computer shows. That's the problem. They're all in the public and not really for sale anymore. While the Xircoms are still floating around. Plus you don't need a dongle for the Xircom. I know from experience, if you have a 589, chances are you have no idea where your dongle is.

Unless you're really on top of things, then you always know where your dongle is.

I *ALWAYS* know where my dongle is.. heeheh.. I have a few that do not need the dongle and some that use the same dongle.
