Linksys WPC11 v2.5 and WinXP
Well I just got XP installed and I am having a terrible time getting my wireless to work again. It was working FINE in 2k. I downloaded and installed the latest WPC11 v2.5 drivers and everything. I get the little green "wireless" icon at the bottom right. When I doubleclick it all I get is INFO, SITE SERVEY, and ABOUT. What happend to the Security tab to put in the WEP information? I really don't want to turn wep off.
Thank you Matt |

I was fooling around with the linksys usb adapter and I had the same problem. The wep stuff is built into XP. Don't try to configure your WEP with the linksys software. I don't have the adapter anymore but as I remember you need to open up the network connection, right click on it and select properties. The WEP stuff is buried in there somewhere.

probably what you'll need to do is not use the config software that came with your card, just disable it in your startup and don't touch it. instead, use the zero-config provided with xp. right-click the network icon in the tray and hit "view available networks". if that's grey make sure that the zero-config service is enabled in the services control panel.

Ok I went through this myself on a WPC11 v3.0.
The answer is, if you want to do things through the linksys config software, make sure under properties you uncheck the USE WINDOWS TO CONTROL WIRELESS SETTINGS or whatever (under the network connection properties in the wireless tab). Once you do that, REBOOT. It should then work. I also manually disabled and stopped the Wireless zero-config utility service under administrative tools\services. Just to make sure. Then all those other tweaking tabs showed up under linksys' manager. Mind you, if you enter a WEP key w 128bit encryption, you have to enter it HEX. You can't just click the misleading ASCII checkbox when entering your key: it won't accept it no matter what (i've tried). Either use the XP settings, (which I found confusing) or the linksys ones by stopping and disabling the wireless zero config util. |
