Linux Support for ORiNOCO cards

I am looking for the best PCMCIA wireless card with rfmon support to do sniffing on Linux and Windows. I had thought until recently that the best card was the Classic ORiNOCO Gold card, but after searching through the netsumbler.com forums, I read about ORiNOCO B/G combo cards with external jacks. I have downloaded the ORiNOCO Client Selection Guide pdf file, and it has supported this. To all ORiNOCO gurus all there, should I buy this new ORiNOCO b/g card (model # 8470-WD) instead of the classic ORiNOCO b card? Do the two cards use the same Hermes chipset? Are both cards supported by Linux because for Linux support is imperative to me?

Overall, my quest in buying a card is to find one that:

1. has external antenna connector
2. has at least 802.11b, ideally b and g support
3. is supported under linux
4. is supported under XP (and NS)

Any thoughts???

DO NOT buy the "New B/G - Proxm" Card..... It may or may not
work with NS, it's a 50/50 chance...

NS will work 100% of the time with the "Classic Gold" cards.
Again, don't get the "Classic gold" card from Proxim as they
may send you the wrong kind.. Check Ebay

The Classic Gold and the B/G card use different chipsets.
Classic=Hermes B/G=Athros

The card that meets all 4 of your requirments is the Original
Lucent "Classic Gold Card". Search in the FAQ there you find
pictures of what cards to get/avoid...

Thanks for your help, everyone. I'm ready to purchase the card now, but I'm afraid of buying the wrong one. Sorry to ask such a dumb question, but does this appear to be the card I'm looking for?

Hey.. i just looked at that link ( for the 8410-WD)
and eveyone says yep thats it.. but wait!?????
it clearly says PROXIM on the black antenna section???????

now I AM confused!

I thought we where all told to AVOID stuff that has PROXIM written on it ( anywhere ) ???

yet... this is pretty confusing... the 8410-WD according to Jason at F.A.B. website/shop, says 8410-WD is the original Classic card
( but surely... that Classic, was out way before Proxim took over? )
you see my problem here?

I'm looking for a classic, NEW... and I think I've found them...
8410-WD ( stated Classic Gold by Jason as F.A.B that works with NS )

PLEASE let me know what the score is!

has ANYONE got an 8410-WD that works with W98SE and NS.. without having to patch it etc..???

Please dont say, oh go to ebay, look out for a card branded Lucent Technologies, Agere Avaya etc... I'm asking about this 8410-WD version.

Oh, nearly forgot to say... the 8410-WD i've seen, has ORiNOCO in white text on the black antenna housing, it's purple, and has the gold stripe at the bottom of the logo's edge
The black antenna housing has a moulded wavey line on it ( just like the Avaya version )

Any idea's?

If this 8410-WD IS the propper working Classic Gold.... I'm going to ship 20 NEW Boxed cards to the UK, and sell them on to who-ever wants one at roughly £50 a pop.

The Gold CLASSIC by Proxim is good to go. It is the same as the Lucent Orninoco Gold, the Dell TM 1150 and a host of other rebadged clones.

Ah right, so what about this 8410-WD card though? it has ORiNOCO written in large white letters on the black antenna section..... is that DEFINATELY good to go also?

Diversifying here..sorry.. I've also seen a 2dB classic and a 15dB classic? how odd...

so this 8410-WD ??? apparently is a 15dB... Will it work?
has anyone GOT one ? and running it no probs with NS?

( i'm about to make a big investment here ( 20 cards ) so i dont want to make a BIG mistake! )

What card? The a/b/g? No. Get the CLASSIC NOT the new PROXIM. It is the only card that truly works with ns (that and it's clones which are in essence the same thing)

Orinoco a/b/g (8480-WD)

I'm getting the feeling that this is *not* a card to use with NS.

Anyone have any positive for it?

Good call... A and/or G cards are not supported in NS.
