yes it can be done.
first tho, u need to be sure that the card you have is a lucent chipset. then get the latest firmware exe from wavelan.com, and also find a good hex editor. I used Vedit.
next, open the upgrade exe and search for LUCENT_TECHNOLOGIES-WAVELAN Then run regedit and look for the string associated with your card, in my case for a compaq wl110 this is COMPAQ-COMPAQ_WL110_PC_CARD-E648. Copy this into notepad. next go back to the hex editor and over type the lucent text LUCENT_TECHNOLOGIES-WAVELAN-blah-blah with your registry's entry for your type of wireless card. Do not over run the length of the name. if necessary, pack out with spaces. save the exe, and run. it will search the registry for your new type of card, instead of saying "no card driver present" I have used this sucessfully with my compaq card and it did flash up the station firmware. If anyone has a compaq wl110 they want to flash and needs the modified exe, drop me a mail. However, I'll make no claim it will work on your card. Therefore only do it if you have another card / dont care about screwing your card up etc. Regards, Paul. |

Hi Paul.
I follow your instructions to upgrade my WL110 with the Orinoco new firmware... and I couldn't make it work. It only says "no card driver present". I also tried using Orinoco driver for Windows 2000, instead Compaq one, but I get the same error. Reading string of card identification, it's a COMPAQ-COMPAQ_WL110_PC_CARD-E648, just like yours. If you can send it to me for trying one more time, I'll thank you a lot. My email is madATj0ker.net (change "AT" for @). Thanks in advance. |

just another way....
another way is to rewrite your .inf file for your card. (only verified on w98, 2k might not work)
just replace the dll's and sys's and disk content entries in the inf file with the names of the orinoco files. then insert your card, and let m$ ask u for the drivers. select your new .inf file and go on. after reb00ting, run the update util and be happy with your new firmware. i've done this with my elsa mc-11 wep64 (orinoco silver card) and it works fine. remember: be careful when flashing your card. don't flame me if something goes wrong. |
